Really hard to know who to root for. I don't understand the basic ideologies (the real ones, not the media conceptions) of either country well enough. I do know that Ukraine's president is Jewish which is nearly a deal breaker but, on the other hand, Putin is sympathetic to Judaism to an unacceptable degree and has also announced, even if bullshit, that he's attacking Ukraine in part to eradicate neo-Nazi elements from their military, which is all very non-based. Plus they're sort of getting their shit pushed in by a much smaller nation (the Finnish did this to the Soviets with great effect during WW2). I think it's a draw for me. May they obliterate one another. Either way I know my gas or some other product that's even vaguely associated with one of the two countries is going up in price since this entire pandemic has opened the flood gates on unchecked pilfering of the middle class, using every possible excuse, whether real or not, to justify the gouging.

Imagine you're a Russian soldier. One minute you're sitting in your depressing housing block, eating stew made from root vegetables and drinking cheap vodka, while your rag of a wife sits nearby and knits more mittens. Always with the mittens. You stare out the window at the gray landscape and sky. Life could be worse. At least you have shelter, stew, and mittens. With the blink of an eye, you're stowed in the back of a shitbox Russian transport with a goofy Z painted on the side, tottling along on your way to Ukraine. An aerial photo shows up online of your convoy and everyone laughs at how stupid and old your vehicles look, proving to the world that, one generation and political system later, Russia is still a dump and doesn't have nice stuff. You have no idea everyone's laughing at you because you're too busy bracing for impact as your vehicle runs over civilians and dodges Ukrainian drone strikes. You finally reach your destination - some crummy apartment complex, not unlike your own back in Russia. "Kill everyone", your commander orders. As you advance on the building, clearly not a military target and certainly a war crime waiting to happen, you're shot in the head. You don't even have time to think "Aw, fuck, I'm dead" in your ugly language. On the other end of the barrel, a silver haired babushka grins wryly. She places a notch in her rifle's stock - there are 8 now.
