Alright, here are some of the Senators who I find to be cool.

THOMAS HART BENTON

-As a boy, was expelled from school for stealing money from students. As he left the schoolyard for the last time, he turned around and yelled ""I am leaving here now but damn you, you will hear from me again!"

-Fought in the War of 1812, where he and his brother engaged in a shootout with Andrew Jackson, who was encroaching upon their barn. Benton successfully shot Jackson in the arm.

-Became a lawyer and a renowned duelist. He once killed his opposing attorney in a duel, after the other man had challenged Benton.

-Elected to the Senate, where - ironically - he became one of President Jackson's biggest defenders. He would become the first Senator to serve five terms.

-When Jackson finally had Benton's bullet removed from his arm, the President offered it back to Benton, who replied "Keep it. You've earned it."

DAVID BRODERICK

-Apprenticed as a stonecutter, before joining the Gold Rush, where he made money by minting and selling gold coins that were cheaper than they're supposed value.

-Entered California politics, rose to Lieutenant governor and became the effective dictator of San Francisco, accumulating power and getting rich by doling out political jobs to those who promised to give him half their income in exchange for future political favors.

-Elected to the US Senate, where he split with many of his friends in the Democratic party by joining and leading the "Free Soilers," an anti-slavery faction.

-Was killed in a the duel by his former friend and rival politician. It had been called "the last notable American duel."

(Broderick's last duel)

ROBERT LA FOLLETTE

-Known as "Fighting Bob," La Follette was known for his electrifying oratory, which propelled him through his political career.

-A Republican progressive and enemy of corporations, La Follette was known for his invulnerability to being bought off by the moneyed interests, and his hatred of those politicians who were.

-In 1924, La Follette jumped ship and joined the Progressive Party, where he became the new party's Presidential nominee in that year's election. He managed to get 17% of the vote, a huge amount for a third party candidate.
