Things I been working on

Posting as I get them ""complete""

first up is Dancy Kawaii, an audio visualizer that every 30 seconds chooses a random pattern out of 8 and a random palette out of like 100 or something

Audio quality pretty bad because it's youtube playing from my PC, recorded and uploaded to Youtube from my phone. But yknow skip around, see what the ol girl is doing.
e: here's the original audio if you want to do a tubedubber or something
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R3Ie5FrbfI

It also switches into idle mode if it doesn't detect any bass for 45 seconds, and then it goes through 10 or so idle patterns, which make for a much less interesting video

Looks very fascinating! I can picture this being an interesting musical visual product if it weren't for the size of it.

very cool, i can imagine this type of thing would be a hit with the zoomers of today, they love neon lights in their bedrooms and heavy bass music

Wingman looks sick. Apex was such a good game back when it first came out

this has some issues that make it effectively non-playable (it turns on, it works, you can pop the ball around) and I dropped $1600 on it, which is probably too much, but I cannot deny the a e s t h e t i c

Rewiring the thing and replacing all the springs and doodads will probably be a pain in the ass but for how cheap it was will deffo be worth it.
Does the mpu work?

Mostly!

VFDs are all in perfect shape, which is a big plus, all the targets work, all the lights were redone with LEDs one or two owners ago, sound is beautiful, but there is one dead solenoid for the multiball, and if a ball is stuck in there it will crash the next time you try to start the game.

The game quits 9/10 times you hit any of the three slingshots, otherwise plays fine. I know this gen of Gottliebs has a specific board that will do a panic if a solenoid gets stuck, and that may be the culprit, but I don't have time to poke and prod at this thing with a scope for a few weeks. I'm also just going to replace all 5 or so solenoids since I'm already doing one, and there's a few leaf switches that need to be swapped out. Doesn't seem like anything tooooo major, assuming I can figure out the slingshot crash.

I already ordered replacement decals for all the targets, as well as two copies of the original flyer, so I can frame it with both the front+back on display

I don't want to do too much modding or restoration work on it, because I'm a pretty huge advocate for video game preservation, and that includes leaving wear marks and such. I do plan on swapping out the back glass for something less hideous, though, saving the current backglass in storage.

The current backglass isn't even original, it's a really shitty repro. You can see fuckin jpeg artifacts on it

e: I used to be in favor of restoring artwork etc, and now I get super pissed when people plaster decals over the original screen printing, and it's entirely because of this article

Pushy Kawaii

This is the second revision of a game I built two years ago. You have a counter, and a button. When you press the button, the counter goes up by 1, and now you have the high score.

It is the pure distillation of the concept of "a game"

And it sounds lame

Until the button is in front of you

There's a couple effects-- if there's a 69 on the board, those digits will be rainbow. If there's a 420, they will be green. The button cycles colors the faster you press the button. It ended up in the arcade at Games Done Quick 2020, and people were speedrunning it and shit:

For rev3 I want to add a dedicated stopwatch for people to be able to speedrun or whatever

That's cool that you got people to do it at games done quick! How long does it usually take to finish one of these projects?

Uhhhhh I mean, depends what's going on

If I can find some 3d models, like I've been able to do for Pushy, it's largely just coding effort, which could be a few hours to a few weeks. I spent a lot of time adding new effects to the visualizer, like a month total. Pushy was maybe a week and a half? But then once you get past "it works" you start just adding more and more shit.

I can build an arcade cabinet in like 3-4 days at this point, assuming I have a plan and materials going into it, which is a pretty solid turnaround.

I have plans for a big fucking 10' wide LED display that have been put on hold because I just really don't want to sit down and burn holes in ping pong balls for 10 hours straight.

So.... it really depends on the project.

the "eat shit nerd" sign visible in the first youtube link

All the 3d files came straight from thingiverse, and it was like an hour of code. But then I wanted to mount an arduino directly to the display, which took me a few revisions on a design, and each one took ~3-4 hours to print

So like
It's hard to estimate.

E: IRL, it says either "JAMPOD OPEN" or "JAMPOD CLOSED" and switches when you hit a button, to designate if the DJ booth in my chunk of a festival is accepting people

E2: But all the individual models that were part of that project counted to like, 20 hours of 3d printing time

The pinball machine will legit take several months of work to fully restore,

especially because I just fried something else and it doesn't actually start the game anymore
