Modern State of Game Releases

Anyone else notice how the games being released nowadays seem to release broken and buggy? It seems like the developers aren't putting as much effort into bug testing and releasing games rushed. Examples of this is the recent GTA Trilogy, Battlefield 2042, Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 76. I was planning on preordering the GTA Trilogy but it ended up being broken. It really seems like preordering is a bad decision nowadays considering the games being released end up buggy and broken with microtransactions in everything. Thoughts?

Back when videogames were all physical copies (pre-steam etc), if a game was broken or buggy, all you had was an expensive disc.

Nowadays, dev teams have to make sure their game works on hundreds of different systems, often they'll have dedicated teams that look for these bugs and compatibility issues but they're typically limited (esp with deadlines). Ex: With Cyberpunk 2077 I had no issues whatsoever, but my friend with a different CPU had every bug you could think of.

But yeah, don't pre-order. Also, don't buy the GTA Trilogy, pretty sure it was intended for mobile and they figured they could get away with slapping it on PC and Console for extra $$$. Pirate that garbage.

I don't think the hardware components of the system itself are the cause of game/program bugs.

Hardware components are often the cause of major issues in large games - especially GPUs and the abundance of them. Screen tearing, artifacts (flickering, dodgy textures, screwed up geometry etc).

Issues caused by bad code are common and often not related to hardware, but the biggest problem with Cyberpunk on release was hardware for most people. Their specs couldn't keep up (also lol poor PS4 people), so characters and cars etc would load in late causing pileups/flying/exploding vehicles, GPUs overheating and so on.

A lot of this is laziness, ineptitude, etc.

Cyberpunk was rushed out the door by the corporate fuckers who wanted it out for Christmas, but the development also sounds like a mess. There’s reports of things like a developer making a shader themselves if they needed one instead of checking if one already existed so you had all these people basically doing their own individual things with no coherence. That the game ended up being as good as it was despite that shows you how insanely good CDPR’s writing staff are.

GTA Trilogy Remaster just seems like they did an extremely lazy and shitty job and used AI upscaling for a bunch of it. I’ve played like half of III, which is fine, but what I’ve seen of San Andreas looks terrible

I’ve been playing Metro Exodus recently. That’s a real good game. No 3dmm, though

3DMM is not a game, it's a way of life.

BF2042 was the single biggest disappointment for me this year. I thought they were basing their engine off of BF4, but its so unpolished.

Yeah, this is pretty much it. games are far more complex than they used to be, and its also now expected that most games will be cross-platform. game developers are stuck in a tough place because most gamers will not pay more than 50-70$ per game but the amount of man-hours that goes into development has vastly increased.

Most gamers won't even pay $50, they'll wait until Steam sales
