Good news: 3dmm's source still exists

Hi everyone. So I've been using my "Twitter fame" to badger Microsoft employees into at least checking if 3dmm's source still exists in their archives, and up until recently I had several people go looking for it, but come up empty. Apparently it's not in the "usual location", so there was some worry that it had been somehow lost.

But no longer! With some collaboration between a couple Microsoft employees, they were finally able to track down where it might be, and yep, good news: it is, in fact, there.

So there's still hope. They're going to talk to the people involved in the open sourcing of old stuff, and while it's quite likely nothing will come of that due to the complicated licensing of 3dmm, I'm just happy to know it's at least a possibly, the source didn't end up getting lost in a server transition back in 1998 or anything.

And I thought you'd like to know this too. I will, of course, keep you updated if anything happens with the discussions around open sourcing.

I like to think that the quest to get the 3dmm source code is a sexy spy thriller with lots of intrigue and L-shaped guns tucked into red and white striped tube socks.

Thanks Foone for this news. You have done so much for the 3dmm community and continue to do so. Just knowing it still exists with the possible source assets and everything is wonderful news. It probably won't go anywhere, but knowing it's safe is fantastic news in its own right. Thanks for the info!
