The 3DMM Desync Blues

I could have gotten DQ2 done by now. I could have gotten progress done on the Sci-Fi contest done by now. I could have started to work on side projects that I have been eager to start by now. With all things considered, I could still to this day be working on 3DMM.

But I haven't. I haven't made any progress on the program in three months.

I have been receiving this major problem with FPS de-syncing, and it has sucked all the life out of me, as far as trying to get a movie done. One day I would boot 3DMM, work on it with no issues all day, and close the program. The next day, I open the program, the FPS is slightly slower or faster now, and all of the sound syncing is fucked completely. Truth is, this has been a problem for me ever since I started using 3DMM on a Windows 10 computer. I would have to use the 3DMMFPS to re-calibrate it, and it usually hangs between 0.92 when it is moving too fast, or 1.12 when it is too slow. Some days, it is just right, and sits at 1.0. Recently, it has gotten worse, to the point where I can't keep the FPS consistent at all.

The frame rate would desync half way into a project.

As I am working on a project, without me even realizing it (because the change in frame rate is so minuscule, I don't even notice it at first), the FPS would change to move slightly faster or slower while I am, let's say, 2/3 of the way through a scene. It would play fine the first few hours into a movie making session, but I would play it back a few hours later, and the whole thing turns into a fucking mess. I wouldn't even turn off 3DMM yet, and this still would happen. Even worse now, it is not just the 3 different frame rates. Sometimes, it would go too slow, and I would put it at 1.12. Now THAT would be too fast or slow, but only sometimes. Nowadays, my routine with 3DMM is boot it up, see where its at with frame rate, play around with 3DMMFPS for several minutes to find the proper sync, remember that it could, at any moment, re-adjust again, and by the time I could finally get going with it, I am too mentally drained to do anything on the program.

So. Fuck this shit. That's why I have been on a hiatus.

I will soon be getting my brother's computer, which is a custom built PC with Windows 8 installed. Knowing how 3DMM is, I hope to god I can transfer my movie files with little to no issues. I also hope by then, that it should run better. If this still occurs on that computer, then I don't really know what to do with the program anymore. I am very anal when it comes to sound syncing. When I watched my entry on the Kill Plopilpy compilation, I grinded my teeth on how bad most of the sound cues desynced. It's just not fun for me anymore because of this.

I just hope the Bored With 3DMM Demon doesn't get me over this.

There's gotta be some way Jayrod or one of the code people in here could fix frame syncing.

I can relate, I've been working hard on the Sci-Fi competition, even though I haven't shown any screenshots of it. At least for the first bit of my movie, it relies heavily on syncing and now not as much. The movie not syncing up to the sound gets very annoying as I tend to be a bitch about my own animation, thinking it's not smooth enough or doesn't sync, etc. You're not alone in this.

This is why everything I make now has the sound edit done outside 3dmm

What are you using for this?

Magix Movie Edit Pro. And camtasia to get the footage. I have an absurd amount of sound effects, movie scores, etc on a pair of external hard drives

I too have been considering external audio mixing for my future projects. The sound issues alone are unbearable to work with, but I really cannot be assed to convert every sound and voice clip to "high quality"

I also thought about doing this, but I wouldn't know where to start with adding 3DMM sounds externally, especially with how my movie-making process goes. I tend to animate around the sounds rather adding the sounds to the animation.

You could do a rough cut of the movie's sound in 3DMM, record it, import it into something like Vegas, mute the desynced audio and use it as reference.

I like to make my sound files and dialogue with Audacity.

Alright cool. I snagged a ton of sound effects from film school before I left years ago. I hope I can find those hard drives…

Does that mean you're back at 3dmm?

Sounds plausible. Again, once I managed to get my hands on a better working computer, I'll start using 3DMM once more, and get shit done. Either way, I might consider doing the sounds in post anyways, since it might actually sound better in general.
