Outdoors thread.

Anyone take a major interest in being outdoors? Camping, hiking, taking long walks, fishing, hunting, or whatever else?

I spent a lot of time outdoors as a kid, growing up in a rural area, but it was mostly to wander in the woods away from parental supervision and break glass on rocks. As an adult, I've been soaking up the natural resources my state has to offer. There's an abundance of state and local parks, land trusts open to hiking, and probably some areas that constitute trespassing but are worth checking out.

Birds! I like birds. I've recently seen mockingbirds, wood ducks, buffleheads, I have TONS of pictures of all of them ofc. I also like this one park near my house. It's a dinky park but just a few feet behind the trees, millions of footsteps have made a hiking path which looks gorgeous in the fall. Orange leaves look great on this mellow path.

I love the outdoors. I use fishing as an excuse to go explore the mountains and woods around me, but I mostly choose to go places where I feel I'll be less likely to see anyone else.

I also discovered some fossil hunting opportunities that are fun as well, but all of these are just excuses to get outdoors.

Kayaks and bikes are a bit too much effort to load up and use, so I prefer my own feet. However, I live on a creek just to make that all easier.

Where do you live nowadays, Jon? It's winter and I need a vacation and some camping recommendations would be sweet. Or alternatively, a sexy cabin for us to get together, and hot tub with a bottle of vodka, and see where the night takes us.

Lucky. Not gonna complain though, I have some great forests near my house (one of which is partially belonging to a golf club, so there's a sudden golf course in the middle where you can't walk on it because it's private property. blegh)

Nah, man - not after you sexually harassing me and sending unsolicited nudes over ICQ back in the day. We're gonna have to live with a "head nod from a distance" relationship.

I like hiking and shooting. Im not that good at fishing but my old man is a really good fly fisherman with tons of gear. I want to learn a bit from him now he's retired.
I used to go angling a lot as a kid but fly fishing looks like more fun and trouts are good eating.
Also I've gotten into longbows and I'm a bit shite at that too but once the weather gets a bit nicer again I'll lock that skill down no problem.

Well, yes. I've spent most of life in the outdoors. As a kid i was a boy scout and attained the rank of Eagle after many nights of camping. I worked at a Scout Camp as a merit badge instructor as a teenager in the summers. In my 20s I attended a survival school where I learned how to live off the land. Nowadays I work in the outdoors as a wildland firefighter. For long periods of my life i spent more time sleeping in tents than inside. Still today i work cutting down trees all day. It's not uncommon for me to hike 6+ miles a day, althugh I'm getting old for a firefighter now and I used to routinely do 20+ miles a day when I was working on a more elite crew in Alaska. I also enjoy shooting, fishing, etc. Although I have never been hunting. A friend of mine also has a cabin up in the National Forest that I take care of for him when he's not around (which is often since he's in grad school), so I go up there and do things like cut down trees, repair the roof, repair the driveway, etc. And in return i get to use it when i feel like it, for shooting or woodworking or whatever. I would like to buy property up there sometime soon but for now I live in a town house at the base of the mountain.

I only really started fishing a few years ago, but in my opinion this is the best way to fish

I'd say 20 miles is a good walk. I do stop at every pub on the way though and consider the distance to the next pub very important when i trapse around the countryside and i plan my route accordingly.
When every beerhole within a 20 to 30 miles distance of your house knows your usual order of a their best pint and a glass of ice water without saying anything you are doing this correctly

I do a fair amount of backpacking and canoeing trips every year, and my gear is maybe good enough that I can start winter camping this year

Here's one of my camp spots last weekend

I am still having a bit of knee pain from the janky trail, though.

I've recently started fishing down at the coast a lot. I want to try and make it down there at least once a month. Lately I went there my friend helped me gut some trout and we grilled them right there on the coast. I'm still not 100% confident on gutting the fish on my own but I will do it next time I go down there. I am off work on Wednesday and I'm gonna hit up a stocked pond here in town. They got catfish and SOME bass but not many. Here I'm gonna upload some pics of the last time I went down to the coast (north padre island outside or corpus christi. Absolutely love this beach)

Nice stuff! I would love to get into coast fishing, but that's a three hour drive minimum for me. Might have to wait for retirement to actually practice!

It's about 2 and a half hours from me which isn't TOO bad. Its funny man, I lived in San Antonio for 14 years without ever going to the coast, I went for the first time this summer with my mom, son, sister, and niece. I absolutely loved it and I'm gonna try and go down there at least once a month...... hopefully. It's honestly not even that bad for a day trip. The highway down there is 75mph so most ppl go 90. You get down there before you know it. I'll post more pics next time I'm down there

Just got back from the blue ridge & smokies. If you ever find yourself in the linville gorge then be sure to hike the "cabin trail". You might hesitate halfway down & consider turning back but keep going. Keep going until you reach the river. Do it for 3dmm.com

The pics are from a day hike that went above the cloud ceiling. Tennessee is such a underrated state. But shhh, dont tell everyone. Send them to yosemite instead

I love air conditioning. I'd rather be inside with AC and the internet down than vice versa.

I love indoors. I love a dark, air conditioned loungeroom with surround sound and a big TV. I've never more comfortable than in my AC'd loungeroom.

.... sorry
