General Sports Thread

I know this place isn't exactly teeming with sports fans, but I'm sure at least some of you are following the MLB playoffs or the NBA finals or the NFL season. So let's discuss all things sports in this thread.

Right now, I'm watching the final Rays vs. Yankees game. I really want Tampa Bay to win the World Series. In such a weird, abbreviated season, I feel it would be perfect for an oddball team like the Rays to win, and it'll be lame as hell if the World Series ends up being Yankees vs. Dodgers.

Haha was unwanted sports talk actually spilling into other threads? Or are you just taking this opportunity to be a cyrin' compcat?

I kind of just feel bad for sports nowadays, it's going to be forgotten as a quirky old historical fad and I think even sports fans know this deep down.

I literally can't tell whether or not you're being self parodying.

I am. I do honestly think sports are going to become much more niche over the next few generations, but the same can be said for lots of things. I have had very little exposure to sports the past few years, my dad is down in the lower 48, I no longer work at a job that involves interaction with customers, and you guys don't seem to be talking about it as much, so from my immediate experience it does seem to be dying right now beyond just Covid, but I know that's just because I'm in my own little bubble. But I have no current annoyance with it because I'm just not really hearing about it at all right now.

See, no other replies to this thread. This is what I mean about feeling bad for sports.

I think that's less to do with the current state of sports, and more to do with the current state of 3dmm.com

I only really watch cricket, but I do pools for March Madness and the NFL usually. I'm wondering if baseball is a good sport for me to get into - I think its long form like cricket, and I like some of the really magical plays I've seen in videos on YouTube, but I haven't looked much into the rules of the game. I also like games with lots of statistics so I guess it would fit?

Baseball has lots of statistics, including some weird complicated ones if that's something you're into.

I posted on here before that I think sports are the only thing still holding society together. There would be way more civil unrest right now if it would have been cancelled this year. When there are no sports, all of the 9-5 people with normal social lives become agitated. Of course, things would have to already be really bad for sports to get cancelled, but I believe that would be the tipping point.

Arguing online or irl about politics or whatever current issue is pretty sports-minded. So we would see way more of that if sports got cancelled because people would need to fill the void. It is like debating over sports teams but requires more emotional investment in "winning". No sports combined with other problems like a declining economy and we would probably get way more riots breaking out with different sides

Imma follow this thread closely. Best nfl games I watched this weekend was ravens and steelers (I was pulling for baltimore but they couldn't pull it off) and chicago & New Orleans. I was pulling for chicago because I got a pretty cool coworker from chicago but dude from the bears dropped two critical passes. That ravens Steelers game was great tho. My boys known as THE WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM had a bye week. So we'll see what happens next week.

Classic saints magic, I had faith they could pull it off

Lol @ washington football team, say what you want about their new name but I think it has a peculiar nostalgic early football feel to it. Maybe that is what they were going for since it is the least offensive. They should play in leather helmets

Its like they are sort of mocking the whole name changing conundrum. And surprised everyone by being as simplistic as possible, lol its pretty clever

Haha I like it too. Unfortunately I think it's just a placeholder until they come up with a new politically correct name.

If they embrace the ol' time gridiron look and feel, it could be a winner. Right now it still sounds like a joke.

I think the Eagles will end the season with a winning record, but right now that division is pretty sad. The Steelers will probably win the Super Bowl this year, but I'm kind of rooting for Philip Rivers to finally get to the promised land (with Indy of all places)

I'm not much of a sportsfan but sometimes one of old buddies invites me to watch non league semi professional football and it's pretty fun. You go to some random town you've never heard of and watch shenanigans like pitch invasions fights and standing right next to the managers going beet red and yelling a lot.
The beer is very cheap too which is nice for me.

I'm watching the Jets and Patriots now. Really curious to see how well Brady does without Belichick this season and vice versa. My favorite team...the "Washington Football Team" has not been doing so well.....but then again there is not a single team in the NFC east with a winning record

Just saw the stat that cam newton hasn't had a TD throw this season and has thrown 5 interceptions. I wonder if the Patriots absolutely bomb this season if it will tarnish Belichick's legacy.

Brady just had the worst loss of his NFL or college career

I'm curious whos success is more dependant on the other Brady>Belichick or Belichick>Brady. Belichick coached Bledose tho too right?? I'm pretty sure he did but I am too lazy to google right now. Pretty sure Bledsoe won a superbowl too....could be wrong
