General Video Games Thread

I just beat Hitman 2 (the new one, not Silent Assassin, so technically Hitman 7?). It's a great game, very much like the previous game. They've truly mastered their formula, like Absolution was good, but I think they listened to their fans who kept saying they wanted more like Blood Money and not only did they provide that but they doubled-down on that approach, basically quality over quantity. Like if you just run in there, shoot the target, and run to the exit, you could probably beat the whole game in a couple hours at most. But if you take your time and try to explore all the possibilities that the levels provide, well you'll see how richly-detailed and thought-out everything is. Even outside of the "mission stories" there are opportunities everywhere. And it's good to shoot for a higher score, but unfortunately I don't know where the actual challenges are listed so the only thing I know to pursue is the "Mission Stories" and general stuff like only killing the target, never having your cover blown, not being caught on camera, etc.

The "Contracts" stuff seems cool, being able to set your own targets and rules and whatnot, but that's been there in the last few games too. What I'd really like to see in future games is a level editor of some sort. I think with that sort of community modding I could play endlessly.

There's supposed to be some DLC levels coming out down the road as well, which I'll definitely get.

recently got enter the gungeon. its great. also got dishonored 2, seems good

have a ton of singleplayer stuff in my backlog that i need to get through.

i wish PC had a good new arcadey racing game with popular online multiplayer. the popular stuff isn't very entertaining to me

I played the first two Gabriel Knight games semi-recently. They’re pretty good. I think I like the second one better, tbh, even though it’s a 90s-ass FMV game. It’s also surprisingly gay for a game of its vintage.
I’ve also been re-buying a lot of games on Switch that I bought on PC and never played, haha. Hollow Knight is definitely in my top 2 or 3 Metroidvanias ever. Iconoclasts is very weird and meandering story-wise but incredibly polished and fascinating in that it was made entirely by one dude. Kero Blaster is also a good little game by the creator of Cave Story.
Also finally played Night in the Woods recently. Extremely good, though I still apparently missed a bunch of content, despite trying to be thorough.

I was wondering if this Hitman 2 was a remake of the other Hitman 2, but I guess it's not.

Did you use a walkthrough? I tried playing the first one but found it way too hard. I loved the art though.

yeah Hitman 2 is great! I've only done the first 4 levels so far but I'd say they've all been as good as any of the Hitman 1 levels besides Sapienza. annoying that they got lazy on the cutscenes, but other that no complaints.

scroll over to the right on the same pause menu where you view the mission stories and there's a "challenges" section. you can toggle between only the ones you've already completed, only the ones you haven't, and all of them.

I did a handful of times, yeah. The annoying thing about it is that a lot of the puzzles can be done on any day, which makes it hard to find what you missed by looking in a walkthrough. Also, a lot of the deaths towards the end of the game are super bullshit. Worth sticking it out if you can get past that, though, imo. The second game is a fair bit better about that kinda thing. The third game is pretty infamous, but I plan on playing it at some point.

CSGO added a battle royale mode and went free to play. its actually really fun but completely different from all the other clone battle royales out there. very fast rounds, few players, you can buy stuff and it gets delivered by drone

^ I actually thought RE7 was incredible, and I loved RE4. Clearly inspired by P.T. Love the creative move towards increasing immersion (some of the best detail in a game I've ever seen) and it was also a very scary game. I didn't even play it in VR. The boss battle with the mom was horrifying. That said, I'm looking forward to the RE2 remake, looks great in an RE4 type of way.

As far as video games, man, I'm burned out by shooters overall. So many games that just have this filler gameplay where you have to shoot at 20 dudes coming at you. I'm not sure if I could play through RDR2, even though I loved the first.

Been replaying Zelda: BOTW on my projector and it's the game that never stops giving.

RE7 was great, but i'd put it behind RE1 and RE4 as far as how much it stands out for me. it has 0 good puzzles, so few cool weapon upgrades and little inventory management. it does have great boss fights though. lol @ Dad trying to run you over in the garage. also the tapes were great, i really liked the first tape where they're investigating the house. and the atmosphere overall is great.

yea i dunno, RDR2 looks lame to me, i already said how boring i find Rockstar games to be in the other thread... i was saying:
Quote:
i feel like with all of their games, even their newest stuff (GTAV), they have a surprising amount of missions that feel like i'm being sent back in time to when N64 recently came out and developers were just getting used to how to make puzzles/challenges in a 3D world. Rockstar barely knows how to make a real consistent creatively FUN experience (for me).

well then this video review came out which summed up basically everything that i say about Rockstar games. for me it was worth the 40 minutes cause it hit so close to how i feel and was pretty funny at times:

I beat Dark Souls 3 again with the expansions and everything, it fucking ruled. My character was so powerful and bad ass.

I'm playing Breath of the Wild right now... all my brothers are playing too

aaaand.... i always play UnReal World. And Soul Calibur 6, just got that. the storymode is cool, it's really advanced. it's a lot like Soul Calibur 2. I think the even-number SC games are always good, and the odd numbered ones are always... less good

Bout halfway through Bloodborne. Took me about 2 hours to get through the first area...probably died literally 20 times, then something clicked and I'm hardly dying at all anymore, unless it's once or twice from a boss battle. Loving it so far and I want to try all the other Souls games after this.

Bloodborne is my least fav, I could not get a handle on the gameplay at all. You don't have to play DS1 to play DS3 at all, because the point is that time is nonlinear in DS. But, it will give you a lot of insight into the backstory and stuff. You won't pick up on the various nods and references in DS3

I bought like every older Hitman game the other day, except for the sucky ones. Where should I start?

I got:

Hitman: Codename 47
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Hitman: Blood Money
Hitman: Contracts

Also bought MDK2 for nostalgia, and Rainbow 6: Seige (haven't played yet but the updates alone took 13 hours.)

Also I got the first Dues Ex game and the other one Lohr recommended me.

Hah! I'm glad someone else likes NakeyJakey, he's great.
I've been thinking about streaming some games that I've been meaning to play just because it's nice to have someone watching sometimes.

Of those four definitely Blood Money.

anyone else rebuying games they already own? I find myself doing this sometimes and I honestly can't justify it. Some of these sales are so good they get me to literally buy something I already own.

ALSO I really hate that I bought my first few xbox one games on disc only to find out that Microsoft basically punishes you for doing that now.
Games need to be installed onto the harddrive whether there's a physical copy or not, and the only difference if you get a physical copy is that you will forever need that disc to be in the console to play the game. Fuck you if it gets lost or scratched.
