This is a lot harder than a video or sound embed. The reason being that twitter includes all content of the tweet (i.e. text, images, links, etc.) as seperate elements within the embed itself. The only way to support this would be to allow users to paste any arbitrary HTML into the vbcode and try and sanitize it for malicious tags (incredibly risky and probably futile) or to implement server side support that queries Twitter's "oembed" REST endpoint for the data (something I don't really have time or interest in writing right now).

I only spent about 5 minutes looking into this, so maybe I'm mistaken. If anyone has any suggestions though, I'm open to hearing them.

i know nothing about how it works but i just know the twitter embed works on lots of other sites, reddit etc, so i dont get why we would need to be able to post any HTML/etc

edit: oh i guess the 2nd thing you said is how they do it (oembed), which youd rather not do

can we get a Bown post embed? You would type [bown][/bown] and link the post and it would embed it.

Does the board support javascript? I think twitter has a Java widget but I don't use it so I'm not %100

I was thinking about this the other day and realized I failed to consider the likely possibility that Twitter has CORS enabled on their server, meaning I could probably query their oembed service entirely clientside in the browser. This still requires work, but wouldn't be quite as difficult for me to do.

Oh, I'm sure there is a plugin written to do it all, only problem is that the version we're running is incredibly out of date now. Nobody is writting plugins for versions older than 3.8 these days.

i forgot that this works on Reddit only because of the Reddit Enhancement Suite addon. also, it was recently removed from that addon on FF for security reasons... so yeah i guess its not that common actually

For Twitter, sounds ike you're using Firefox? Mozilla requested that RES turn off the nicely formatted version (using twitter's script) for security reasons.
