webm is a compressed video format designed for the HTML5 enabled web, usually at a high-frame rate and very low filesize. Some sites that are used to sharing animated gifs have added support for it due to the fact that especially for long animations and high-frame rates you only download a very small file.

Webm is the future. A 6 minute video (with audio and in high resolution) packed into a 6.4 MB file. The only problem with it is you can't save them on Google Chrome, only Firefox and Firefox based browsers (like TOR). Might be just me though.

webm becoming more common, have had about 5 images in the last month that were webm but i posted their gif versions of, and theyre always much worse quality

oh ok I thought I didn't know what webm was but its this new thing where gifs have play buttons? I've seen that around. seems to defeat the purpose of a gif if you have to click to play.

if you're serious, they're way higher quality than gifs, can do 60fps high res etc

but at the same time it instantly loads 100% of the time instead of needing a buffering video.

oh and it can automatically play like a gif, it does for me on reddit.
