A little update and a new 3D scene

Hello all, long time no see! Hope everyone is doing well. As some of you might know I studied 3D design and animation about two or three years back, I posted some stuff here and there showing off my work. After I graduated I didn't really feel like I was good enough for the business, even though I got an A on my exam. Bills had to be paid so I had to set 3D aside for the time being in order to get a job and make some money. Next thing I know I've been working the same job for almost two years now which was way longer than I planned, so it was definitely time for a change.

I am now only working two days a week while the remaining days will be spent on working on my 3D portfolio, and I couldn't be more excited. I'm efficient and highly motivated and the thought of working that other job less which results in less income, is also the kick in the ass I need to get things running. I just finished my first work and I'd like to show it to you, but I'm saving the rest until I'm done with the portfolio which will hopefully be around summer.

Now for the scene, I was aiming for a Max Payne inspired shitty apartment. Not much else to say really! I'm pleased with it but I might change some things along the way, listening to feedback and such.

You gave the entire forum two days to respond before acting like a little whiney bitch. Guess I'm OUTTA HERE!

You're going to need to give us more than two days, especially in the Art Gallery. Shit moves slow around here now.

The render looks absolutely amazing, and that's really cool that you're focusing on what you love doing.

I'd like to see a higher resolution render if possible. It's a bit tiny and looks like some post processing had muddied some details.

Aah Ash, good to hear from you. Doing good? Yeah the good ol' place is rather dead nowadays. Been a while since last time. You mentioned muddied, anything in particular? I can post a high res pic if necessary.

Things are well.

I'm at home now on a different monitor, and DANG it makes a difference. I think the contrast or something was off on my work monitor. I can see the textures a lot clearer now. Before the couch and walls seemed a bit blurry or "flat" but not now.

My only criticism, which I search for to provide - is the edges on some surfaces. You've got great textures and a good sense of rot, age, and dilapidation - but some of your edges are perfect. Specifically the visible corners of the walls. Some displacement mapping or a little notch and damage here and there would really remove that sense of "perfect computer generated geometry."

Nothing in the real world is PERFECTLY straight and seamless.

The texture itself seems to cut off at the corners, again removing a sense of realism.

Edges are often more worn than the surface, as people brush by them or hit them when moving things. Furniture edges especially.

I'm getting a bit hyper critical, but you see what I'm saying. Just trying to be helpful.

The scene is really amazing.

Did you make the textures yourself or are they sourced from somewhere?

That looks great! Like for someone with no 3D modelling knowledge I think it looks totally pro

Great feedback man, appreciate it! If it was still blurry it's most likely because I used depth of field on the camera but that's probably not what you meant. I've always used one edge on corners when it comes to walls but now that you mention it I'll most likely stop doing that. Most of the textures are from cgtextures.com but I create the bump/displacement/specular maps myself using a program called CrazyBump. Not that it's hard or anything, just importing the textures and it creates them automatically. Saves me a lot of time.

Ah sweet, yeah I use CGTextures too for modding and stuff, awesome site.
Never heard of CrazyBump, I'll check it out.

Yeah - play around with edges.
The couch, for example, has a great sense of shape and form. I have no problem believing that is a completely real couch.

You doing any animations?

Looks really good. Only advice I have is to pay attention to where the eye is drawn. Mine is drawn to the center lamp, so maybe put something a little more interesting there.

Pic looks really creepy, reminds me of Silent Hill. The creepy vibe is actually conveyed really well, I feel uneasy looking at it, like I know something is going to pop out.

Great job dude, keep it up.

Looks good! Reminds me a lot of those pre-rendered backgrounds for like, Resident Evil or Grim Fandango or something, I'm not sure why.

to be honest the only thing i would stray away from is the cliche chromatic aberration you've got going on. on low resolution pictures like that it just doesn't look right. it just blends the textures together while retaining unnecessary noise

otherwise it's really good. it looks like it came right out of the source engine or something since the lighting and shadowing is so dull. that's always good. a lot of rendered scenes i've noticed just overdo the lighting effects

No ones apartment is that lifeless. Most people have some odds and ends in their apartment. This guy has beer bottles, a pizza box, and 5 books. Not very original.

If you haven't been to one, go to a poor persons apartment and you'll see what I mean.

could be a stakeout place and not an actual apartment for living in
