so i watched this movie again the past 2 nights. it's pretty good. observations:

- I'm pretty sure Poe is gay. i'm like 90% sure Poe is gay. this movie seems like it would make the best fighter pilot in the galaxy be gay, and there's a scene where i'm pretty sure it's meant to seem like he's checking Finn out. he knows they're just bros though.

- c-3po is also a gay robot. it's cool.

- the sound is s o good in this movie. i watched it on bluray with my friends bose system and it sounded great. it also held up pretty well in bluray form on my hdtv

- speaking of holding up pretty well... haha you thought i was going to say carrie fisher & han solo. well, they haven't really. but man some of the shots in this are really beautiful & painterly, they really hold up to scrutiny

- i was pretty right about the longsword thing. he did a lot of longsword-y stuff, including using the crossguard as a weapon and binding another weapon with the crossguard. i also really liked the stormtrooper guy who had like a nightstick/poleaxe

- i don't think captain brienne of tarth really died. star wars trash compactors are pretty escapable, especially if you're the fucking captain of the bad guys and probably know the door code or where the emergency stop button would be or something. and the battle took a fairly long time

- i think it would have been really funny if han solo did a wilhelm scream when he fell off the bridge & died

that's cool. she was a cool character and i like it when badguys come back instead of having a different badguy or 2 for every movie

The cartoon's gradual reveal of Greivous? Best, most intense Star Wars moments ever.

In fact, I thought that series ended on that one episode where he's flying through the air, about to destroy the remaining jedi. I think that was just the end of season 1. It wasn't until after the movie that I learned there were a bunch more episodes, which kind of ruined the poetry of it all.

i saw this movie a few months ago. the more i thought about it, the more i realized it was not good at all. too bad.

it felt very small (unintentionally so). the characters' stories and arcs were uninteresting and/or nonexistent, for the most part. the stakes weren't well set up. and i really didn't like that the movie is really vague about what the hell is actually going on in the movie universe.

yeah idk i waver back and forth on this. i mean it's better than phantom menace, so... that's something. i think pretty much any movie that had like coherent plotting & some good action / special effects was going to blow episode 1 out of the water. but this movie definitely has some flaws especially in regards to plotting

this movie is really really fun and well-made and acted. story-wise, it doesn't hold up at all, despite some interesting characters. it accomplishes everything it needed to in the short-term, but it's gonna be a good few years after the end of this trilogy before we can tell how successful it was at being a follow-up in the long term (probably not that successful)

phantom menace is a worse movie but i can think of at least a few aspects where its probably better than this one.

hm well, im not gonna lie, i could have done without all the "state of star wars today" stuff. ive already read ring theory & thinkpieces about thinkpieces about the "prequel revisited" thinkpieces and i don't think this video added anything particularly new. as always though it was v. entertaining

yeah that review had its moments but mostly I thought it sucked. the entire first hour had nothing at all to do with the new movie. 20 minutes of it was devoted to some blogger's dumbass theory. not tearing it apart for being hilariously terrible, not saying it was smart and right, just kind of explaining it and then saying "ehhhh....maybe." for a theory that didn't even involve the movie he was supposedly reviewing!

and a lot of the actual review part didn't really ring true to me either, like his complaints about diversity and lack of romance/sex. I feel like he really only had one big complaint about the movie (it being a retread) but felt like he had to pad it out to be as long as the other reviews anyway. and since it didn't have 2 hours of complete dogshit source material to work with like the prequel reviews, it just dragged on. thumbs down.
