"Philip" - GBJam game jam entry

We were about an hour and a half late on the deadline (ran into some pretty stupid bugs at the very last minute), but it's done!

http://gamejolt.com/games/other/philip/32016/

Me and my friend Charlie entered GBJam 3 this past week. The rules of the game jam were:

1. Create a GameBoy themed game
2. Create all assets within the time frame of the jam (9 days)
3. Use the GB screen resolution 160x144
4. Use only 4 colors (at a time)

So we ended up making a tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, and made a game divided into segments based on six of his roles (Twister, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Capote, Synecdoche, and The Master). It's more of an interactive experience than a GAME game, but it was fun to make. It's definitely a little rough around the edges. There's a lot of timing issues, and features that didn't make it in, and some other general design incongruities, but I'm proud of the amount of work we managed to put out in a short amount of time. Check it out!

That was hilarious, But I have to say, it was nothing like a gameboy game.
EDIT: Nevermind, so it's not really meant to be played like an interactive experience.

Mac version is up. Let us know if it works. Neither of us have Macs so we can't test it atm.

There it goes!

Haha, not much of a game, but some fun visuals.

Haha, mattress man was the best one so far.

Cool stuff man, really enjoyed it. Fog on the second-to-last level was cool. What movie is that? Last level was awesome too.

Thanks, dude. The level with fog was based on Synecdoche, New York. I'm the most proud of that level, for sure. It was the last one I designed and I somehow managed to do all the art and the music for it on the last day in a couple hours.

2 things:
1. Is there an 8 bit rendition of "I believe in miracles" in the second part?
2. Did you code a small little engine to work with, or did you use some base for it?

1. Haha yes. I did all the chip tunes using Pulseboy, with virtually no understanding of how to read music. For each one I either played it by ear or used a MIDI program to get a vague idea of where each note would be on a keyboard. The Twister segment is supposed to be Child in Time by Deep Purple, the Synecdoche and PUnch Drunk segments I just tried to imitate some of the score, the segment for the master is meant to be a rendition of Slow Boat to China, and the Capote section was just my friend noodling around and we threw it in because we were out of time.

2. My friend did all the programming using Love2D lua framework. That's all I know.
