Hey chaps,

This is a miracle warning of cigarettes!

Well... sort of. Just a gross experiment I made using displacement maps and pose-morphs.

Well mostly trying to pursue a career as an artist / animator, but also finding commercial work on the side. It's a bit of a struggle, but I'm hoping to ramp up production and break through to the next level! I make a lot of prints too now:http://benwheele.com/Antiquity-Bonk

I still love the aesthetic of 3dmm, and the philosophy of DIY animation. I'm glad to see the community is still alive and kicking, it's really quite inspiring. Maybe I'll make another actual 3dmm movie one day!

haha you should reinstall 3dmm and sign up for the third Drunk Chain Movie, see if you've still got it! nice to hear you're still animating and stuff, i can only imagine using 3dmm again would be just like riding a bike.

the prints and sculptures look awesome man, i like the weird freaky style. i dunno why but the second image with the boat/bath thing reminded me of how weird and random some of your 3dmm movies had, particularly the cutaway scene in texan silly boys 2 in the land where EVERYTHING is funny. just the imagery and stuff, i can kind of see that style you went for has kinda carried over to your present stuff. looking good!

That sounds fun, is it a strict rule about the drunkenness? I'm one of those lame tee-total guys these days...

Thanks for checking out my prints / sculptures, yeah I think a lot of my work now is influenced by the stuff I did in 3dmm. I don't know how to explain it to people, but there's a certain 'philosophy' behind 3dmm creativity... I see it almost like a 'punk' type of animation, quick and raw. (Although I think animating all the stupid fiddly zombie guts in Aaarnishoz would have been much faster in Cinema4d!)

haha yeah the point is you have to be drunk when you're making it, so you belt out a hilariously crap drunken part in one night, it's fun! also i still dunno where you found the patience to add that much detail to the blood and guts in Aaarnishoz, even now i'd say it's still one of the goriest 3dmm movies.

Haha what a good idea, it sounds hilarious, I'll check it out.

I remember I was sooooo obsessed with Peter Jackson's 'Braindead' when I made Aaarnishoz, so I guess it was just a labour of love !

Cool vid Ben. Nice to see you posting something.

Wow, that Baphomet sculpture is sick, as is the one of the sorceress kneeling down. Really love it. Are those actual sculptures or just 3D? I always thought they were porcelain or something but now that I look in more closely...

I've actually lurked your page several times in the past few years, I think your sculptures are awesome. I'd love to hear what your experience has been like with doing gallery art. You're definitely one of the only people from here who has really pursued art and I've always been a big fan of your style and attitude about it.

Also if you haven't seen Omnirom's HIGHMEN, I suggest you check it out, the style really reminded me of your animation style when it came out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FjBAvS6iEw

Ah thanks for the feedback on my sculptures mate. Indeed they are all digital - I sculpted them using Zbrush and Sculptris and rendered with Cinema 4d. I see the prints almost like 'photographs' of imaginary objects... but I guess primarily it's because I'm too lazy to learn how to use porcelain for real!

It's been a bit 'on-and-off' in terms of gallery art. I did sell quite a few pieces in my Antiquity Bonk show a couple of years back, which was a brilliant, but I still had to do commercial work for a while to build up funds. I still really love experimental animation, so I'm currently looking into UK Arts Council funding to try and support it this way.

Thanks so much for posting that HIGHMEN video! It's insane!!! That's made me really inspired to make another 3dmm movie now. (I have thought about cheating a bit... was there ever a way to import the 3dmm character rigs / models / animations into other software...?)

I've also thought about making a 'film essay' history of 3dmm video. A bit like the films of Chris Marker... that would be cool... I've tried to contact Will Maltby in the past... but never had any luck... does anybody know what he's doing these days?

Kind of! It's not quite out yet, but Eukos has been working on a 3dmm2 that basically does all that, and is easier to operate than 3dmm.

Will Maltby hasn't been heard from since he came back, but a lot of older/classic 3dmm movies have been uploaded to youtube by user supacat99.

Here's another cool semi-recent 3dmm movie if you're interested: Space Fire by Compcat

love your work. had to go back and watch some of the shorts you've posted over the years. really bizarre in a way that is natural (i.e. does not feel forced) and genuinely unsettling.

Wow thanks for the comments and feedback,

I remember seeing 3dmm2, it looks awesome, I can't wait! Has anyone ever tried using "3d ripper" to pull out the 3dmm character models? (I think it's directX based... I'm not sure how 3dmm draws it's graphics...)

It's really great of supacat99 to upload all those classics! I love re-watching them all.

Does anybody ever remember a short movie called 'Crazy' or something... This guy says 'Hi, I'm crazy' and a girl says 'Hello Crazy' and he says 'That's not my name' and she says 'Okay crazy'... eventually he blows her head off...? I've never been able to track it down anywhere... I remember it was pretty mental...

Space Fire was brilliant! It almost seems as though 3dmm has come of age... it definitely feels like a new era now... almost like modern 3dmm movies are more self-aware and not trying to be something they're not...?

I'm still watching The Chair - I love it so far! It reminds me somehow of Enriched Enlightenment. It's very well structured for a chain movie too - was there a script written beforehand?

i wrote a lil script for my segment when i first received it, bringing in the default movie characters and stuff as screenwriting is kind of my specialty, can't speak for anyone else though.

I don't like how this video is no longer than 30 seconds.
