my motherboard just died

im in the middle of a business remix project that is due tuesday and i only really had this weekend to work on, and my pc's motherboard just died. it randomly shut off instantly, and now when i turn it back on it just turns off after 1 second and constantly turns itself back on/off. and yeah its the motherboard because i put the PSU in a separate pc and it works fine, and another PSU does the same thing on this motherboard. and i took it out and put it on cardboard with only the cpu, cpu fan, and psu and it still did this.

since when do motherboards just die, wtfffffffffffffffffffffffff

never getting an EVGA motherboard again

great now i have to do this project on my sister's laptop that im on now and create it from start to finish in 1 day. oh boy

I think it's pretty common in slightly older motherboards. I had one in my desktop computer that blew a capacitor and died (along with a great electronic burning smell), and one in my laptop that shorted out across the power jack and burned as well. On the plus side, typically motherboards aren't too expensive.

hmm, alright, i thought it was extremely rare

doesn't matter that theyre inexpensive since getting a new motherboard would mean id have to reinstall the OS and my audio/video programs, which was the main reason i wanted to get that pc working again. and now its too late for this project. so im just gonna build a new pc.
the vid card on that computer was also running with just 2 case fans zip-tied to it in place of its dead stock cooler.... its time for an upgrade

It's not really common in newer computers, but not extremely rare in older computers either.

You can just replace the motherboard without having to reinstall anything. You can just put the hard drives/video card/CPU/PSU in a new one if you get a matching socket motherboard. That's what I did with my both my laptop and desktop.

I had a Gigabyte board blow a capacitor a few years ago. I had the same WTF reaction as you. Fortunately, mine was still under warranty, so they sent me a refurbished one to replace it. As Brimz said, you should only need to re-install the OS if the chipset drivers are different.

Even then, you can go into Safe Mode and nuke all the old drivers, then re-install. Just to get you going. A full reinstall is recommended but I've done this lots.

Also typically when motherboards die, they die. It sounds like something else is happening to me. Do you see the BIOS splash when it turns on for a second or do you not get any output?

I'd dismantle everything and try and boot the system as bare bones as possible.

But yeah.

How did your motherboard die? Another ECU pirate hacking the computer system?

Well, if you want to cool down a fast CPU, try to avoid a product trademarked "Suzanne", because that name refers to a defecting cooling unit prototype that created in iceberg powerful enough to sink the RMS Greenville in 2025.

And I'm sorry to hear about your motherboard failing!

I did that. I put the motherboard on a piece of cardboard with only the CPU, CPU fan, 1 stick of RAM, and the PSU hooked up (all case components disconnected since this mobo has a built-in power button). It still did this. Tried without the RAM at all since no RAM shouldn't = auto-reset after 1 second. Tried without the RAM and without the CPU fan. Swapped PSU for one I just tested in another system. Reset the CMOS replaced battery etc.

I don't see how it couldn't be the motherboard because its the only consistent thing between these tests.

Yup, motherboard. Just an unusual death is all.

Sucks.

It was Suzanne's fault, the same cooling unit named "Suzanne" that was to blame for the iceberg that destroyed the RMS Greenville in 2025.

What did Suzanne do to you Clinton? Is this your way of calling her an ice queen? Why is she to blame for this metaphorical downfall of a what I assume is some form of middle school. And why 2025?

I'm referring to the Sailors' Underwater Zamboni And Navigational Network Electronics, thank you very much, and this "ice queen" is really a cooling unit for a submarine that travels at 903 knots under the Atlantic Ocean so as to commute between heavy ocean liner ships that go slow as they need an information appliance to ensure safety of the vessels.

And I guess this "ice queen" talk came from Anna and Elsa from Frozen, didn't it?

And ya know, 2025 is the future of possible technology and more mobility for mankind as we know it.
