Bandwidth Issues

This month hasn't exactly been kind to us in terms of bandwidth usage. As of July 16[sup]th[/sup], we have used approximately 58% (5.8 of 10 GB) of our allocated bandwidth for the month of July. As you can see, we still have a long way to go, and if the rest of the month is as busy as the first half was, we're going to run out around the 28[sup]th[/sup]. If this were to happen, the site would be down from the 29[sup]th[/sup] through the 31[sup]st[/sup].

Believe it or not, this is the first time we have even come close to running out. Reasons for this include;

1.) The plan we are currently using on our new host only allows us 10 gigs of bandwidth per month instead of the 20 gigs we were given with the old host. (Please note however, we have never used more than 8.6 GB in the past. That record was set back in December, 2001).

2.) The board is much more popular in the summertime because school is no longer in session and many users are on much more often. (Pardon Australia, of course)

3.) The board has more active users now then it ever has in the past.

Measures I have taken to lower our bandwidth usage include;

1.) Image attachments are no longer allowed.

2.) I have increased the GZIP output to level 8. For the past few months, we have been using level 6. Level 9 is the highest, however there is a performance overhead the higher you go.

3.) The permissions for Guests have been changed so that only Registered Users can read topics posted on the board. Any unregistered viewer will unfortunately have to wait for an account before they can have any clue as to what is going on in here. I hope to change this back at the begining of the new month.

4.) Topics in the general chat have been pruned. Anything that was older than May 17, 2002 has been deleted. This applies to the general chat only, however.

I will keep you informed on our bandwidth statistics throughout the rest of the month. Upgrading to a more expensive hosting plan with more bandwidth is an option I am considering.

Thank you for your support.

Hmmm lets hope that the server doesn't run over its bandwidth limit this summer

You should make people host their own avatars, or atleast give them a certain file size.

One guy with a 50k avatar or whatever could add a mb or two over a month. Okay, that's an estimation, I actually reckon it's much higher.

I used the "sup" tag I created a few months ago when I went on a custom vbcode extravaganza. It works just like the spolier tag.

Jim, how about YES?

Anyone that doesn't have the program is just wasting bandwidth that could be used by 3dmmers.

General Chat
Used for all types of discussion, both related and unrelated to 3D Movie Maker.

The BB isn't intended for people WITH 3dmm, and it's not intended for just 3dmm discussions either. So banning them is stupid.

So you deleted all the old threads? That kinda sucks...but it's better than having the board shut down at the end of the month.

3DMM.COM

It's like a skateboarder joining a car forum, with no intention of owning a car, or even learning to drive one.

If the "car forum" has a place for GENERAL chat, which doesn't have to be about cars, what's so bad about that?

I didn't have 3dmm, and I came here because the discussion was good. If I want to discuss 3dmm, I goto the movie forum, where it's intended.

Why is a newbie, with 3dmm, talking about being fined for treading on a dog, better than a veteran without 3dmm contributing to some intellectual discussion?

c'mon, if you don't own 3dmm and haven't attempted to purchase it, then you need to be banned...

Wait, Viva has 3dmm and baofu is his brother. So, technically, baofu does own a copy, he just doesn't care to use it. Ah, fuck details. ban the ass-cow.

Baofu doesn't even REVIEW 3dmm movies.

And Jim, would you really want someone asking 'Who is Sgt Steve?', 'What is 3dmm?', 'WHO THE FUCK IS GUSTAVE?'

No.

No, I wouldn't. Which is why there's a Movie Discussion forum. Why would someone without 3dmm go in there?

It's just, not right.
This board IS for 3dmmers, If it wasn't we'd have 100+ members we couldn't talk 3dmm to. And it'd be weird.

My point is, 3dmm veterans shouldn't be banned just because they no longer have 3dmm. That is STUPID.

And the board naturally attracts 3dmm guys anyways.

I agree, vets should stay, because at least they can REVIEW movies. Someone with no interest in booting up 3dmm for whatever reason, should honestly be violated with a banning pole.

Actually, if you don't have 3dmm anymore, you should've already left yourself and there'd be no need for a banning. If you lose it, that's one thing. If you have no intention of getting another copy, escort yourself to the door. hanging around a gaming board when you don't have the proggy is rediculous. On any other BB, those people would be banned immediately. You don't see people on Max Payne BBs who don't play the game anymore. It's dumb tha you people allow yourselves to become so attatched that you can't leave.

I will admit that this BB is unlke any other, it is more addictive, you do feel like you're on a more personal level. The truth remains, you let yourself cloud out the fact that you shouldn't be here just because you don't wanna leave. All people have to do things they don't want to do. When you ge a new copy, come back. Frankly, it's almost TOO reasonable and logical and I can't believe you people are having this argument. No Proggy = No BB about the Proggy. It's so simple.
