Explination for downtime: (5-10-02)

As many of you probably noticed, the entire site was disabled yesterday evening and stayed that way until late this morning. Apparently someone, or something, caused the database to start reporting error messages to my e-mail address once every 0.2 seconds. I got over 1000 database errors in my mailbox before my host noticed the sudden drain in memory resources and suspended the entire account. For the rest of the evening I had to play marco-polo while I attempted to get my host to fix the problem. Initially they thought the memory drought was caused by simple traffic, and told me that in order to keep my account I had to upgrade to their dedicated server plan (which costs a ridiculously large amount of money). After literally begging them to unsuspend my account, I finally convinced them it was a mistake, and that our board does not normally take up that much in memory resources. However, immediately upon the unsuspension, the flow of error messages kicked right back up where it left off, and the account was once again automatically suspended. This time, I didn't even get a reply from my host, and I was simply left talking to a brick wall.

I didn't get any more news on the situation until around 10am this morning, nearly 14 hours later. Apparently my host renamed the database file because it was what was telling the server to send the flood of e-mail messages. They never told me this however, so I was left to believe that they deleted the entire database completely. It wasn't until this afternoon that I realized the database was still intact. I reinstalled the index files, and it worked fine the first time, making me wonder what exactly happened last night to cause such a meltdown.

For a while I thought someone hacked the site, then I thought it was just a bug in the code, but to be honest, I really don't know. It is a possibility that someone came up with some sort of "state of the art" flood attack script, however I find it hard to believe that anyone with this type of knowledge would be wasting it on our tiny board. I can't come up with a solid 'who' or 'why' either. I think it is only logical to assume it was a glitch by the programming department.

I've disabled the mail-to feature on the website for the time being, just in case something like this happens again. It's my sincere hope I don't have to go through anything like this anytime soon, because I was seriously considering not bringing the site back up at all.

Thanks for your patience,
-Space Goat

That page depresses me so much, to think someone could go that low, rebel against a small community based on a microsoft kids program released 7 years ago....
Has he even got any friends??
