I feel really bad for Lindelof after that interview he did after the BB finale.

Lost had a really fucked up conception and initial execution, shitloads of problems. They didn't have a chance to figure out what was in the hatch until they were writing season 2. Putting their foot down in season 3 and demanding an end date was unheard of at the time, the network usually decided how long you ran for and that was it. Only Lost had the power to demand such a thing, let alone receive it.

The execs behind BB seemed to learn that lesson, and allowed the writers to decide five seasons was it, no more. It went out at the top of it's game, because the people behind it were willing to see it go out on a high note, and be remembered as great, rather than drag things on for the sake of money. Lost was battling sequelitis while BB managed to avoid it for the most part.

Bah whatever, many people hate the Lost ending but I liked it.

the finale of LOST was fine. plenty of people liked it at the time. this notion that it's a widely disliked finale is preposterous.

This isn't true. I'm pretty sure Vince Gilligan wanted one final season, but AMC decided to drag it out by splitting the season in two and having extra episodes.

This decision was made at a time when Breaking Bad had small audiences. It's only had great ratings this past season. There is no way AMC would have let Breaking Bad end if it was getting the audience it's gotten this season.

I had actually heard the opposite!

No idea why they wanted to split it into two halves though.

splitting a final season of a show into two is an increasingly common "we don't want to get rid of our popular show" move (sopranos, battlestar galactica)

in the case of breaking bad, i imagine it's because AMC has had difficulties developing series after mad men-breaking bad-walking dead and they're dreading having two of those three gone (in fact, they've split mad men up too)

Everyone I know didn't like the finale of Lost. Some maybe didn't hate it, but I don't really know anyone that would say they were happy with the way it ended. That's maybe more about the final season than just the final episode. I don't feel bad for Lindelof at all. He got to decide when the show ended and could have done a much better job. There's a whole 4 and half minute video about all the unanswered questions and plot holes in that show. It was bad writing. And like Orcus said the show just flew off the rails in the last few seasons and was amazing up until the end of season 3.

Breaking Bad did the opposite, the really had a tight ending. The whole final season (both of them) knew what it was doing to lead to an ending that pretty much everyone I know liked, and most really loved.

But that gif comparison is very interesting, seems almost intentional.

Yeah the final season as a whole is the weakest by far but the actual final episode I absolutely loved. People not liking it is mostly people being told second-hand who didn't understand and were like "oh so they WERE dead the whole time, that sucks" even though that's not what it was. Most of those unanswered questions were just random non-important bullshit, too

Whoa whoa whoa, hold on one second.

The final season was the weakest? Like are you saying the second half of season five? Or season five in its entirety?

You mean when we, and fuck it, i'm so mad I aint even gonna do spoilers:

- Saw Walt buy an M60
- "Wait for what?" "For the cancer to come back."
- Saw Walt go into his now destroyed home to pick up a vile of ricin.
- Saw some dude named Todd murder a child.
- Saw Walt make a "confession" video
- Saw Walt get arrested by Hank
- Saw Hank get murdered.
- Saw Walt and Skyler wrestle on the ground with a knife
- AND WATCHED IT ALL PAY OFF?

Yeah you're right. WEAKEST SEASON EVER.

I'll fight everyone here!

Although, I will grant you some serious point dockage for this scene:

hahaha, I didn't realize Fester was talking about Breaking Bad till like the 3 point and I thought I missed a whole plot line revolving Walt buying a M60 in Lost. That would have made it so much better.

They kinda wimped out at the very end but mostly that's because they were too attached to the characters most likely

yeah some people think the real story ended with him in the snow-covered car when the cops were coming, and from that point on is his fantasy, with the keys falling and everything working out. could be.
i personally didnt think this, but the possibility is there

Apparently Gilligan himself said it wasn't the case. Which is kind of a bummer because even though I don't believe it I like the interpretation
