43rd 60 Minute Song Creation Contest!

This week's theme is:

The City

nickson i was thinking of using a city loop like that too, haha, nice job. i have to say i dont really remember your last entries but i feel like this one is an improvement, you've got quantization down now which i think is something i mentioned needing in your old entries.

scatterbrain that's great, it kinda feels like the opening to a movie at the start, i like the pulsing synth bass. lots of clipping toward the end though

for mine i'd just picked up a new synth so i spent most of the time just fiddling with it. the vintage synth sound resulted in me imitating a sort of john carpenter title screen sound. too bad it ends right at the buildup due to lack of time

im really happy to see the 60 minute contest is back. lets do this every week, even if we only get a few entries each time.

Haha yeah mine clips a shitload sorry, my hearing's terrible at the moment. This is the first entry that I've made while at work and when I got home and listened on headphones it was pretty embarrassing

I meant to vote for all three, so I added a vote to Lohr's. is that illegal?

I like how both Lohr and Scatterbrain went for the '80s movie vibe. works really well. I can only imagine how grimy those cities are! meanwhile Nickson's Theme Hospital/fashion show-sounding piece also captures the theme pretty succinctly. GOOD JOB EVERYONE!

all the entries were great. Lohr's may have been my favourite, it was perfect 70/80's soundtrack music but Scatterbrain's most reminded me of a city for some reason, so I vote for that guy.

Great tracks guys!
I'm glad that this is starting up again, starting to work on music more lately so it would be a good way of practicing how to make different styles and work outside of my comfort zone in terms of production, hopefully the next one has more entries!

haha, nickson, that's the city loop from 3dmm, right? And this seems way more professional than I remember your older entries being. Has kind of a 90's yuppie sort of vibe, which of course is great for the theme. Great job.

Scatterbrain's is nice. Maybe a bit too simple though.

Voting for Nickson. Sorry I didn't have an entry this time. I was actually right about to start on it before I found this thread.

Definitely Scatterbrain's for me. Had by the far the most vivid city "imagery" attached to it when I listened; Koyaanisqatsi-esque timelapse shots of cars moving like ants and Nolan-esque helicopter shots of Chicago skyscrapers. Plus it reminded me of quite a few moments in The Social Network soundtrack, which is somehow also a 'city' sound. Lohr's & Nickson's were loaded with imagery too, but in a more specific 80's Miami cop drama / 70's studio sitcom kinda way, respectively.

Scatterbrain got the idea, sound and movement of a whole city in there rather than Lohr or Nickson's 'still from a movie' approach and for that, he gets my vote. edit: Oooh that is one rough ending though.

so i loaded up reason and tried to make a song, it would've been in the vein of scatterbrain's.

unfortunately i'm uncreative, failed hard, sounded terrible, couldn't come up with anything.

but i was going for the sound scat did, so that gets my vote.

lohr - yours sounds like Rush - Subdivisions, love that song.
nickson - lol the 3dmm sound at the beginning made it for me
