netcom.bat (our uni game)

I know a couple of people were interested in the game my team was doing this semester. We just submitted it today, so here is is.

It's missing a lot of features we originally intended and we were ripping out hair out right down to the last second trying to get it all fixed and working before handing it in. However I'd like to say we're kind of proud of it. My role was making all the art assets, right down to the font. I'd like to think I helped give it a rather professional appearance.

Before anyone asks, we are planning on developing it further now that it's submitted. During the holidays we're planning on going back and restarting the whole thing with much cleaner and more modular code; because as it stands it's VERY hacky. We're also planning on expanding the gameplay quite significantly and eventually adding a roguelike game mode. So we have plans. But as a uni assignment we had to do over 14 weeks while learning C#/XNA at the same time and doing other uni projects, I'd like to think we did quite well.

So try it out, have a look. Opinions and suggestions are more than welcome so when we get back to the project we know what we did wrong and what we did right.

I've put up the video we also had to submit. I'll add some screenshots later tonight if I can. I'm currently finishing off another uni assignment.

that looks cool man, but i think the trailer doesn't do it justice, when it shows you all the weapons, they're all just being shot when there's nothing else going on in the screen, it makes the whole thing seem very anti-climactic, you want to be showing off the weapons as they're takin down loads a shit like at the start.

looking really nice though! can't wait to play it

You can play it. The link is right there in the post. Unless you meant you're not at home or something.

EDIT: Also in terms of the video. I kind of did it the night before as it was a requirement of the assignment, but nothing in any way important. I didn't even have time to put in a voice over or anything. The shooting I just recorded between waves shooting at walls and using the dev. cheat key to generate new weapons.

Well we have to present the game a couple of days, and if ours wins we each get an Xbox. Last semester we came second, but got "most professional", because our idea wasn't original, the game was too hard; but it looked like a retail product. So I'll post in here whether we come second again with "most professional".

Well we came first and won an Xbox each. The judges we got in from Microsoft were REALLY impressed and basically doing everything they could to encourage us to develop and port it to the Windows 8 Store.

So, yeah. I know nobody here really played it or cared. But we won, so that makes me happy.

I played it and cared! (also got crazy jealous because I'm stuck on the whole prototype asset making part of my game at the moment)

That's really fucking awesome dude. I imagine you're more pleased with the idea of judges liking it rather than the free xbox's and stuff?

Yeah, the best part was getting to talk with the Microsoft reps during the break. It was funny because they only seemed to want to talk to us; I assumed it was just because we were sitting near their judging table.

As a result we're kind of looking into development for the Windows Store and other platforms via monogame.

Actually we were thinking of adapting a little board-game we made for the Windows Store. But we don't know how to handle multiplayer and the sending of moves like online chess games do. I don't suppose anyone here has any experience with that?

This looks pretty great design-wise. I really like the tron/neon-type design, the lettering looks awesome. Can't wait to see what the finished product looks like.

From the 3DMM Monopoly project, seems like Liam and/or Pizza would know a good thing or two about that.

Also that's great to hear man, I played it the other day and it was good fun. Well deserved!

Pizza will know more about it, but from personal experience it's just a case of sending messages (code messages) over the network and having the other side receive and react.
Plus you have to decide if you want it server or client-side.

So I'm guessing this would mean we'd need to get our own server and create our own user account system? I was hoping there'd be some sort of functionality in the Windows Store we could use. Although I think if we wanted it to link to Windows Live accounts it'd need to be an Xbox Live game or whatever and cost $$$ like a server would.

I don't think I have either of you guys on MSN or whatever. :/

EDIT: Actually Win8 Messenger is hooked into Facebook chat. So I can bother people there if need be.
