An interesting Japanese buying custom?

I have to do a presentation on Japanese buying customs. Like how Japanese buy dogs as a status symbol. Or how one hotel where you can pay real money to stay with your virtual girlfriend from a DS game. Any ideas and I will be very grateful.

Hahahahahaahaha. Thanks for the suggestions. Decided to do it on dudes paying real money for a second futon, cookies with pics of the girls on them, at a particular hotel for their virtual girlfriend from a nintendo DS game. Check out these pics!

Lol. My presentation is going to be so awesome. At the end I say: "romance with a virtual girlfriend may or may not be stupid, but romance with a real girl is stupid also, isn't it? You buy them dinner, you buy cool clothes to wear, you buy flowers, you think about them a lot, all while you don't have much money and you don't know if the girl likes those things, even thinks about you for a second, or will want to talk to you in the future. So virtual girlfriend is safer, better use of money." Fukin awesome as hell depressing ending, LOL.

It seems like there's a custom of Japanese buying human companionship. In a really interesting documentary "Great happiness space" which is on netflix on demand, or you can google "Great happiness space youku" and watch it there, women in Japan pay cool looking men to compliment them. The men say "You are so great! I'm not good enough for you, why are you talking to me?" and the women are like ^_^.
