'OAK' - my first feature

Hey, as some of you may know I just started filming my first feature. We started writing this back in October, started casting in the spring, and are about half way through production.

Teaser:

The stills looks really nice, and some shots in the trailer are pretty cool.

Not sure I fully understand the concept/plot, or what the dude in the black spandex suit was supposed to be/represent (ghost, evil force, killer in a black spandex suit?)

I'm interested, but not hooked.
I am curious to see some more on it though.

Also the opening animations for the company logos are pretty... not pretty.
The logos are great, but you don't really need the 2D knight flying by in a broken arch shooting lens flares out of his sword. And the Open sign kind of skews a little weird.

You can add tension/mood to the trailer by just fading a still 2D logo in and out. Keep it simple.

Noted on the logos. The animations have been overdue for a redesign.

And once we have more footage I can get a proper trailer together. We'll be filming most weekends between now and the end of October.

Glad you guys are liking it

It does look pretty good. I agree with the logos bit, I've been trying to get a professional to do a high quality CGi one for my film...

Also, Running from a (killer/monster/etc.) in a Forest and hiding behind a tree. Always safety there, heheh. . Looks good! I look forward to seeing the finished product.

how does this kickstarter thing work? Isn't is extremely hard to get funding? Also what camera are you using?

You basically set up a project page on Kickstarter that describes your project and why you need funding and then you have a set amount of time to raise your goal. The catch is if you don't raise enough to meet your goal no one's card is charged and you don't get anything. In our case the goal was $1,200 in 30 days. The majority of donations were from friends and family of the crew and cast. A couple people were just random people on Kickstarter, and I think a couple of you from here. Its very difficult to raise the funds, though. You have to send emails and messages asking for people to check out your page. Sometimes I felt like I was practically begging. We did get fully funded, but that wasn't a certainty until the very end, so it can be pretty nerve-racking.

Camera wise, we're using a Canon 60D. I originally wanted a 7D, so I was a little nervous about it, but everything so far has turned out pretty great. Wish I had bought one years ago.

Sweet, man. Looking good. I have the 550D and plan to start shooting some stuff (mostly practice shorts). I don't have all of my gear yet and expenses are rough this time of year unfortunately. So I really like seeing what other indie directors can do with their Canon DSLR set-ups. Will definitely check out the finished product not so much for the movie (no offense, it doesn't look bad or anything - it's that I'm more interested in...) but for what you're able to achieve with the Canon. Good luck.

DSLR's are great. Our setup is simple too. I'm continuously amazed by what they can produce with so little.

haha hate to be such a pain.. but what other equipment did you use?

you see.. I got cameras/lighting under control.. but SOUND is my real problem. I know nothing about recording good audio.

The reason I'm asking all this is I'm working on a full length movie (yeah.. I know it sounds fucking ridiculous.. but hey. There's no better time than right now to jump right in!)

Hook a decent boom and mic up to it and you're ready to go. Its pretty easy to use. I'd highly recommend finding someone who knows audio, though. Saves you headaches later. Plus its much easier to focus on the actors and getting your shot if you know the audio is in good hands.
