OFFICIAL 3D Movie Maker Virtual Machine Thread! (run 3DMM on mac/linux)

It all started here, but now I'm making it official!

Run 3D Movie Maker on Mac, Linux, and any version of Windows with zero Ogg Vorbis (or other) issues!

Virtual machine includes:
-3D Movie Maker
-All expansion packs
-v3DMM
-All 3DMM utilities included in this thread
-No extra font packs since links are broken

Important:
3DMM is borderline unusable unless you Disable Mouse Pointer Integration*

Steps
1. VM download.
2. Download VirtualBox for your OS.
3. Install VirtualBox.
4. Import the VM into VirtualBox. Launch VirtualBox, then click File -> Import Appliance. Navigate to the downloaded file (.ova), and keep all settings default; just click Import.
5. Run the VM. In VirtualBox's machine manager, it's called 3DMMXP. Click Start and the VM pops up.
6. In the machine's window, click Machine -> Disable Mouse Pointer Integration.
7. Click anywhere within the VM. The VM now has your mouse pointer. To get back to your real machine's mouse pointer, press the Host Key: Right Ctrl on Windows, Left Command on Mac.
8. Launch 3DMM.
9. When you are done, shut the damn thing down from the Start menu like you would a real computer.

Sharing files
1. Power the VM down if it isn't.
2. Right-click the VM in the manager and click "Settings".
3. Click "Shared Folders" down below.
4. Add a new shared folder by clicking the little button on the right. Select any folder on your local hard drive you wish to share with the VM. Give it a share name, don't make it read-only or auto-mount, and click OK.
5. Put files in it:
From host: The folder is already present on your local hard drive, simply put files in whatever folder you chose to share!
From VM: Go to the address bar of any explorer window (meaning, click My Computer or any other folder) and type in the following:
Code:
\\VBOXSVR\sharename
Replace sharename with the name you gave the share, obviously, then press Enter. You can now copy files into it or out of it.
6. I recommend creating a shortcut to your personal share within the VM. Right-click the desktop, New -> Shortcut. Type that same path in from above, Next, Finish. From then on it's just a matter of clicking the shortcut and you're instantly in the shared folder.

Full Screen
Full screen games usually don't work on most VMs. For full screen 3DMM, the closest workaround is to click View -> Scale Mode. This makes it so when you resize the VM's window, it actually stretches (scales) the image you're seeing, instead of the typical behavior which is to simply show more of the VM's OS. To get back, press Host+C.

Report any issues in this thread.

*With mouse pointer integration enabled, it's near impossible to move 3DMM actors around. The unfortunate thing is that I can't find any way to permanently disable it (in a config file or whatever), so you have to click Disable Mouse Pointer Integration every time you power on the VM. If someone finds a way, let me know and I'll edit this post.

Grrreat! Will try it as soon as I get home!

Question... I've never used any expansions (and I honestly don't intend to), so how does that work? Are they all installed by default?

Everything will just be there; zero installation required. I'm giving you a machine and a hard drive with shit already on it. Ready to go.

So yeah theyre all there, however you don't have to use any of the new expansion stuff.

Oh one quick other thing, I'll admit I was too lazy to apply the no cd patch, which probably fixes the parts where, when avi files are supposed to play, it says "whoops cannot find cd", but oh well, you still don't need the cd anyway and the most that'll happen is an error message that you can basically skip when an avi file is supposed to play. Plus this only applies to (as Clinton calls it) "vanilla 3dmm", in v3dmm there are no issues.

Correct, all nickelodeon and Japanese characters are there too. Just dont use em. If it bothers you, just uninstall everything and reinstall plain ol 3dmm, there's a download link in a sticky thread in this forum.

Man! I should have asked for MS Paint. I wish I would have thought of it in time.

This thread should be stickied! :O

um Paint should be on there, I did a standard install.

checking, one sec.

EDIT: Yep, Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint.

feel free to make a shortcut on the desktop or do whatever you want, again this is your machine, you're only seeding the compressed archive so don't worry 'bout that.

I never did it. I only ever created texture files (square pictures) to attach to various 3D words. The flat font was usually used.

With it, I was able to create a 'cartoon' out of images I was able to create, one texture at a time.

Anything further than that... naww. Too complicated

i'm helping out in the computer-room of a primary school out from time to time and thought it would be an excellent idea to show the kids 3dmm

since these school computers are preventing you from installing apps I launched my portable version of virtualbox with this here. the kids loved 3dmm and i might convince them to actually put it on their harddrives (they also have Pivot, so why no 3dmm?)
