charity sucks

A while ago, I donated some money to the ASPCA so I could feel like I'm above people.

Now, these dickwads bother me for money all the time. and they gave my address (apparently) to the Animal Society, PETA, and most recently, The Make a Wish Foundation.

I'm sure if you combined the cost of all the postage, paper, and ink, it'd add up to a majority of my donation. One time they sent me, and probably their entire mailing list, checks for $2 with a notice, "You can cash this check, but we really hope you don't."

How do I make these people stop? Would they even listen if wrote them a letter? When I made the original donation I wrote, "DO NOT MAIL ME."

charity is tricky anyway. only like 3% of your donation ends up helping the needy - charities have to support themselves first and foremost like any other business.

not the case with all of them i'm sure, but still

What THE FUCK is this about? How that helpful to their cause? I'm actually a little bit enraged by this.

It's blatant guilt trip bullshit. You're not supposed to cash the check of course.

Thank you for supporting animals everywhere... here's a $2 reward. You deserve it for being such a good person. Of course.. this $2 could go to help feed and save more animals in need. So we really hope you don't cash this check. The decision is yours however... What would be better is if you gave money to us....

and then you write a check to them. 99.9% of animal lovers have guilt complexes. So charities get away with being manipulative.

I'm not saying charities are greedy. but how I mean c'mon. All the money I gave went towards being solicited for more money! And I have no idea how many checks might've gone out. I'm sure a small percentage got cashed.

I'd love to know how much a charity grosses and what their bottom line is.

Hahaha. So people wake up in the morning with no particular intention to make a donation that day, receive a free cheque for $2 in the post, decide not to cash it ... and then give >$2 to the guys who sent it to them. Brilliant tactic, to be fair.

the only thing I don't trust about charities is not that I think they're necessarily greedy but that I don't KNOW precisely where my dollars are going. I'd rather donate to a specific case/person or something. Or, if I was rich enough, start my own organization.

You could cash the cheque and take a photo of yourself holding the cash, which can then be sent back to them with a cheque payable to them. That way you're all square.

I hate giving money to causes. I know that whoever is running the organization is probably using my money to come up anyway, and probably only half of it goes to the actual cause, if that much.

Just make sure that any "charity" your give to is actually a registered charity and has a registered charity number.

A lot of those are scams too. In fact I'm pretty sure most mainstream well known charities are.

not the case with all of them i'm sure, but still

the southern poverty law center spends more money on fundraisers than like, actually helping southern blacks

and united way is notorious for sending most of its revenue to its board of executives instead of helping needy families

Texting for charities and relief efforts seems to be the way to go for me.

charities only need to give a certain percent of income to charity to be considered one.
Heart and stroke foundation spends 85 cents in advertising to make a dollar.
