It has its moments, but the writing is downright bizarre. Every character goes through crazy, unrealistic mood swings almost the entire time, and the character development makes almost no sense.

OH BUT DUDE, like two towns over, there's this restaurant called The Breakfast Club, and they're open until like 2:30pm every day and only serve breakfast, and the food is INCREDIBLE. I didn't even like breakfast food before I went there, but holy shit you guys. Creme brulee french toast almost a foot high. Crab cakes benedict. Its incredible, I'm telling you.

EDIT: OHH SHIT AND THE TOMATOES AU GRATIN. Its like, 5 layers of just tomato slices and melty cheeses. OH GODDD.

That part at the end where Cameron just decides that everything is okay, really? Thats not an epiphany, thats a sign of complete emotional breakdown. He likely decided that later that day he was going to either kill himself or his dad, and didn't want to let Ferris know.

The high school stereotypes of the characters in the Breakfast Club are intentionally exaggerated to help highlight their superficial "differences" but it then it makes the resolution feel a lot more powerful when they find out that, beneath the surface, they all actually have a lot in common than they ever thought. It's a good movie!

The Breakfast Club has a few moments where it really falls down. When Emilo Estevez and the crazy girl, who's name always escapes me, are walking through the halls and then suddenly Estevez feels the need to share is a key reference point. A lot of that kind of stuff feels forced, and doesn't work.
Strangely enough, the use of Pot as method to breakdown the walls between the characters provides the needed development to make their monologues and development seem less forced and natural; says alot about the writing.
Ultimately it's still a good movie because it works on that level and, of course:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off, however, doesn't really work as anything other than a teenage escapist fantasy pic. There aren't any emotional payoffs like with The Breakfast Club, though I suppose that's besides the point; the film was obviously not written as anything like it.
Having said that, there is one 'fan theory' which makes the movie better:
Ferris Bueller never existed, and is infact a figmint of Cameron's imagination. Ferris is everything he wants to be and can't, and Ferris' free spirit ultimately leads to Cameron's little change of heart at the end of the film. There are entire websites dedicate to this.

The way Ally Sheedy gets all dolled up at the end makes The Breakfast Club completely irrelevant by today's standards.

Ferris Bueller is Tyler Durden is Hobbes.

I really like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller, especially the latter. They're just really fun watches.
