3dmm vs 3dsmax. You decide who wins.

I was experimenting with 3dmm and 3dmax to see which was better at what.

I did this by constructing and animating two identical scenes.

http://members.optushome.com.au/sinarack/3dmm.jpg

It's a scene from RmeetP, when the main dude expresses himself when people consider him a freak.

Not surprisingly, making the scene in 3dmm was much much more easier and faster than 3dsmax, as well as the character creation.

However, animating is where 3dsmax triumphs.

The camera work in 3dmm version (zooming and panning in) took me one to two hours to complete, where as 3dmax took me 10 minutes to do.

The Myth character in 3dmm version took me 20 minutes to animate him walking through the corridor, where as 3dsmax took me 5 minutes.

However, there were many things I couldn't do in 3dsmax because of my amateurish knowledge.

I didn't know how to add scratches in the walls, or know how to make himself bleed.

Anyway, download the two files and make up your own mind.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of you say that 3dmm version is better.

The only real way to compare programs is if we knew equal knowledge about each program THEN compare them

We all pretty much know EVERYTHING about 3dmm, yet we are - at the most - a quarter through 3dsm

If you knew everything about 3dsm and a good computer then you could chuck something up that would shit all over 3dmm in so many ways

The only advantage with 3dmm is it's simplicity

Most people seem to be learning max now. But has any1 tried using g max? It's the free version of 3ds with no rendering opsion as it's made for games. It's pretty cool. I told my teacher at school who i do grapghics with and he liked the sound of it to. So has anyone else tried g max? Or even heard about it?

I'll stick with 3DMM simply 'cause I have no idea how to animate shoes (shit) in 3DSM and I am too lazy to learn...

After school, if I upload my music video I made in 3dsmax, would you download it and compare that? It's not too special, but I spent about half a year on it, which is about the same for most 3dmm movies.

It's only around 8Mb.

Yeh I didn't think that link would still be working, it's the one I downloaded it from months ago.

If you are getting it from Kazaa, it should be around 60Mb.

all i can say about this topic is try makin a 40 minute cartoon w/ 3d studio max.
it'll take u forever.

while w/ 3dmm, it can be pulled off in a few months.

that's all.

Your animation in 3d Studio Max is not better because it is completely void of any individual characteristics to make it legitimate art. To only have a "pretty good" understanding of 3d Studio max results in animations that are simply TOO smooth and TOO mechanical. Consequently, we see the same techniques done over and over again by everyone. There is no flare, there is no personality, and there is no creativity to it simply because the software does all the work for you, and it does it the same way for everyone else. I share the exact same opinion with Flash. You have to be more than "pretty good" with it to make anything that is impressive, and nobody in this community is better than "pretty good." If I might say so Adrian, your skills in 3dmm have always been more impressive to me then those with 3d Studio Max.

Sounds like you got something against TWEENING Goat !

I don't think you understand the frustration and tedious job behind individual frame editing. It makes characteristics behind camera panning, 3d prop characters and complex movement/transformation avoidable.

In 3dmm, 'art' is expressed in movement. With 8 frames per second, it is easy drastically change the movement of characters.
However, that's all we can do. We can't add new models, textures or character successfully within the environment.

By default, 3dsmax renders in 30 frames per second. This makes successful individual frame editing, virtually impossible. That doesn't mean the flare or spark is gone. Art is expressed in different ways. It's in the models, textures, lighting, positioning and movement.

I could say the same thing about 3dmm... They give us all the same models, the same lighting within the black screen, the same static camera, the same colours and clothing textures, the same animation action within the characters. I mean, how creative can you get with that?

The only way to be creative is to manipulate 3d text and shapes into whole new characters. I don't consider that professional done.

The reason why Bodily Function was a hit was because it broke out of 3dmm limitations in everyway. New models, new lighting, new scenes. But most importantly was the original concept.

However, this came out of 3 months out of work and the end result still wasn't worth the time and effort. With my current understandings of 3dmax, I can predict that I could make a better realistic version of BF within two weeks of 3dmax work.

well, seems that 3dsmax has much better design, but 3dmm seems free to got.

anyway, it's more about patience; you see something fucking awesome and you say to yourself "holy shit, mon. that's fucking nice, for me is impossible".

everything is possible, but the only thing you need is patience

so, I dunno...

I always take from 10 minutes to one week to create and have the complete idea of a character

maybe 3dsmax, because you create the character, and you don't have to move prop by prop like 3dmm

but I like 3dmm because it's a challenge

I agree with Goat, 3dsmax tends to produce much the same looking stuff unless you have a REAL understanding of it all.

I hate seeing shitty camera spins and shit in 3d animation where the idiot animator hasn't smoothed it in a decent way.

With 3dmm, people's style and art come out much more easily precisely because it's difficult to do.
