Are we old enough for custom titles yet?

Seriously, have we gotten to the point where you can finally just flip that switch and be done with it? The Junior/Senior member system is nigh meaningless, and I don't think we're gonna clutter up the board or anything. Just put in a character limit on them if you don't want it too long, and just outright ban people who try to pose as admin or mods. Like, that sort of rule is like shouting fire in a theater: its the one thing you can't do, for an obvious reason, if you're stupid enough to do it you deserve the punishment for being that asshole.

I'd say the community has matured to the point where we can relax a little with stuff like this. Like, I don't think any new members are going to be confused by the chain of command. I'm pretty sure half of them think Haynes is Jesus. I just figure at this point, we might as well have a little more fun.

or at least fix the senor/member/junior post amount. 100 for senior is ridiculous.

I'll change the post count requirements for the member titles, but I'm sorry, custom titles are never going to happen. That's tacky, nonuniform, and just... "ugh". I insist it must be a system defined role.

Junior Member = 0 - 499 Posts
Member = 500 - 999 Posts
Senior Member = 1000+ Posts

I can't configure it to also be based on time registered without a hack, and I don't think that's worth the effort, sorry.

AND

what about custom titles in JUST the testing forum or something

(I've never seen the point, I'm just suggesting for the other people that seem to want them bad)

Dude...we have matching candy bar signatures, and you think this is going to throw off the forum's uniformity? At least add more levels to the titles than "Junior" and "Senior" member. A little flavor, or denotation of stature. Hell, what if you only let people over 10,000 posts have custom titles?

Like, the standardized titles are completely meaningless. That text under our names might as well not even be there. Its not like we need a little sign that says "Junior Member" to know when somebody hasn't been around long. If you think custom titles are stupid, I raise the counterpoint that having "Senior Member" under everybody's name, arbitrarily, is more stupid.

yeah. And it would be cool to have something to look forward to. I think 10,000 is a good number for SOMETHING different. Even if it's just something different than senior member.

But the only concern for me there is all of the people that have been here since the beginning that still only have like 4,000 posts or something but that are totally awesome.

The titles are there to alert users our roles on the forum. I am an "Administrator". Aaran Haynes is a "Super Moderator". Scatterbrain is a normal "Moderator". You are a "Senior Member". I find this very meaningful.

I do not find "Poop Master General" or "Lord of the Tacos" meaningful at all. It detracts from those of us who have real system defined titles. I can think of absolutely nothing that you could put in there that would be of any value at all. It could only be used for silly things, and in the end, make the field even less meaningful than it is now.

It's simply a tacky feature, and I won't have it. I'm sorry. I am open to adding more system defined roles though.

You deserve worse.

Like, just more interesting titles would suffice. Like, every thousand posts, move up a rank and get a more exuberant adjective before "member". Start at member, and then just move up.

Oh, and go crazy sometimes and give people you don't like insulting or demeaning titles. Or let one of the more uppity mods do it. I hear Goro's had a few screws loose lately. In fact, more shows of mod/admin wrath in general would be fantastic.

yes. I agree 100%

more roles would be great though. But keep it professional.

maybe something for 5,000 and 10,000

and maybe even 30,000 (so BR has something to look forward to)

I would offer suggestions as to what these could be but my mind is drawing a blank right now. I'll come back later. This IS an awesome idea though.

what the hell, no, thats a terrible idea. i dont want peter atencio or aaron haynes going on some kind of crazy authoritarian power trip just when this forum is starting to loosen up. that kind of shit is what the cavalcade of mystery is for

I'm with Sprow on this. The titles under our names are completely pointless as it is.

Most other forums I've seen give a VISUAL difference for Admin and Moderator, such as making the text under their name BOLD, or giving them a color (green for moderator, gold for admin). If you have a plain black title, you're a regular member. Since there is literally no meaning behind the titles of those with a plain black title (all of them being a variation on "member"), they are allowed to change their title to anything they want. This also makes it much easier to visually see who is moderator and who isn't.

Having a postcount range separating "Senior Member" from "Junior Member" is fucking stupid, and gives people like Lolazer a reason to post more dumb bullshit just because he thinks we will respect him more once he is a Senior Member. Seriously, I can't believe you actually implemented that. The exact type of person that thinks we will respect them more once they reach "Member" status is the type that we DON'T want posting for the sake of posting.

I don't understand why, when we have such a very SILLY community (come on, every third post on this forum is a joke), we have such "professional" limitations on what is done here, when the limitations really aren't any more streamlined or anything in the first place, just... limiting for the sake of limiting.

edit: For example, I had no idea that Rabid was a moderator till I just read through the titles in this thread. I had no idea McCloud was a moderator till a recent post in admin contact, and guess what, someone in that very thread said "woah, I had no idea McCloud was a moderator". Because there is NO VISUAL DIFFERENCE. Nobody looks at the titles, when the only thing separating them is a word before "Member".

While on the subject of "tacky", when the hell is this going to be taken down:

It looks like the control panel of a spaceship or something, and we have to look at it on every single page of this site. 4 of those links are entirely pointless. If you insist on keeping the links at the top of the page, they should take up about this much space, maybe even less since they're so rarely clicked:

Its just that... when you insist on keeping this forum so "streamlined" serious and shit, I see that you keep completely ridiculous-looking stuff like that, and its really weird.

Just get rid of senior member, junior member, etc. Only mods/admins should have a title.

And what the hell, Goat? Wasn't it your idea to put my title as "Lord of the Poop" back in the day?

This isn't true, you just don't look at them because you've been here for so long and your brain is trained to tune them out. CoilDomain on the other hand immediately picked up on the fact that Crazy Ivan is a Super Moderator in this thread, without anyone mentioning it in a post, and he was only here for 1 day.

I'm not going to argue my design. All I can say is that I find it aesthetically pleasing, and I don't think 120px is impractical from a usability standpoint. It's purpose is to make the forum look slick, or at least unique. I'm sorry you don't like it.

OK... well I agree with Tuna, get rid of titles. Have there only be a title for moderators. There's just no point to the "member" titles. Especially ones that just encourage spam posting from newbies. If that's just too zany of an idea, then maybe just get rid of the different status members so we all are "Member".

edit: obviously this isn't a big deal at all though, the main thing here was if custom titles would be cool which was already turned down
