Guns and home invasion [split thread]

I quit a management position in retail last august to start a resale business. It's been an interesting change and a lot more challenging than I originally thought it would be, but I've learned lot, especially tax-related aspects. It's also given me a ton of free time which is nice (especially since I'm still in college) but some weeks I have way too much of it and it can be extremely boring.

I mostly sell high-end electronics like smartphones, computers, and game systems, as well as music gear. I get most of my inventory by haggling with people locally or buying on eBay. I've met a shit ton of crazy people and been put in some very interesting/scary situations (including me being robbed at knife point) but it's still a lot of fun. I've even been considering opening a pawn shop once I'm finished with school.

Is anybody else around here self-employed? What do you do? How do you like it compared to working for somebody else?

Not really self employed but I get contracts and jobs from two different companies and I pretty much have the freedom to set my own schedules and work from home (although I have an office but there's nothing really in it at the moment) as long as I meet whatever the deadline is.

I wish it was a better story but it's not that great. Basically I was in Milwaukee, WI meeting a guy from craigslist to buy three iphones. I had bought phones from this same guy several times before so I didn't think anything of it when he wanted to meet pretty late.

I was parked on the side of the gas station where we had planned to meet when a car pulled up sideways behind mine and blocked me from pulling out. Five guys hopped out of the car, three came to my drivers side window (which was rolled prior to them pulling up) and the other two went to my passenger side door. One of the guys at my window flashed a knife and told me they knew I had cash and I would either give it to them, or they would take it from me.

I was scared shitless. Milwaukee is one of those cities where it seems like people are constantly getting killed over the smallest things. Needless to say, I just gave them the money (about $1200). I got their license plate when they pulled away and called the cops but nothing ever came of it. I was pretty dumb for putting myself in that position and ever since I only meet during the day, inside of a store or other public area.

No idea. It's Milwaukee so it could be a hundred reasons. I also should mention that they were temp plates and there's a good chance the car (or plate) wasn't even theirs.

how common is it for americans to carry guns with them in cars? like in the glovebox or whatever, is that legal? If I was american i'd own a pistol and keep it in the house just incase, but in canada you get in big trouble using firearms for self defense, it's basically considered murder even if a criminal charges at you in your home with a machete and you shoot him in the face.

it varies from state to state. in virginia you can carry a firearm in your car but if its in the glovebox that counts as being concealed and it's against the law. but you can have it just resting on the seat next to you. you can also carry a gun anywhere other than a school, church, and a couple other places as long as it's worn openly. but like in maryland, you actually have to keep your gun in your trunk or something like that so that people aren't tempted to use it for road rage

Yeah, same. I don't really like it though, I feel unemployed since work isn't exhausting or intensive.

also if somebody charges into your house and you shoot them its usually self defense especially if you gave them prior warning like "GET OFF MY LAND YOU HE-BOON" *cocks shotgun*

also i know in a lot of states you can have a gun with you as long as you're on the way to a shooting range, gun club, gun show, or hunting trip. so if the cop pulls you over and is like "whats with the rifle" you can be like "JUST ON MY WAY TO THE GUN CLUB BROTHER" and he'll be like "AMEN THATS A BIG 10-4"

This except I have to be in my office during business hours since I do technical support and network administration.

Also this is my first tax year as a sole proprietor and charging GST so I've been struggling with my taxes and now I caved and am going to HR to get them done for me :/

guns are fun and cool it's a shame that gun culture and gun rights are basically hijacked and co-opted into the racist right-wing political agenda
