I'm sorry but that game seems like a complete waste to me.
Why not just make a up a story with a friend, and draw out each scene? That's basically what this game seems to be doing.

yeah i've been playing this ever since the beta, it's fucking BOSS.

I'm pretty much the best controller ever born. no lie. i've got that shit MASTERED.

some old tests 'n' shit.

also, guys, read some of the stories here. A lot of them are unfunny and boring but some are also pretty good. it's hit-and-miss.

so, if you're serious about winning some money just give me a shout, bro, cause we can totally do this shit.

haha this is over in 23 hours? YEAH, NEVERMIND.

the biggest problem with the game is you pretty much have to go to your friend and say "hey let's play" rather than connecting to an absolutely random stranger.

if you are like me, you just go to the sleep is death steam community and talk to a random person and say "PLAY WITH ME" and wham, you've got an awesome an unique story-telling experience.

I don't quite understand the point. You write a text story with a friend? Do you create custom sprites and areas? Do you create interactive objects and rooms that random people can come in and use, or do you just create a sealed story that nobody will ever interact with again?

A: no, it isn't a text story, there's graphics. you create your own sprites and areas, yes, but not if you don't want to. you create interactive objects and rooms, then you put the person in there. it comes with a pack of graphics or you can create your own; also every time you play with somebody else you get all the resources (graphics, sounds, environments etc) that they used in that game, so you can basically pass them on if you find them interesting enough to use in your own games. one person is the "controller" who controls everything else (like objects, environments etc), the other person simply controls a character. as a character you can pretty much do or say what you want to interact with the stuff around you, and the controller creates reactions to whatever you do. you can do stuff like have conversations, ask questions, or whatever, but as the player you're limited to moving, talking, and using "act" tags to declare what you want to do. the only limitation is:
each "side" [player/controller] only has 30 seconds to react to what the other person has changed and then decide what they want to do and implement it (although the controller can change this time limit). the best way to understand is just to watch a couple game or play yourself

everything is created in-game. obviously the game gives you a ton of assets to start with but there are ingame editors that let you do various things, ranging from creating new characters/map props (done through layers) to creating maps and "scenes" (maps with pre-placed props at the ready)

think of the editor much like mario paint. it's just about a clone.

look at this to understand how it works

Hmm, it doesn't seem like something I'd be into, but I could see some people really liking this.

it's GREAT when you play with the right player

a lot of people suck at controller. you pretty much have to be an adult to do it because we can act a lot faster and be far more creative than young kids. it's pretty upsetting to me because there's a lot of potentially good games gone bad solely because you are given 30 seconds to create/modify assets and that's not enough time for people who have no idea what they're doing. it's like they don't create single-player stories or create assets for potential ideas before starting a story (they don't plan ahead pretty much) and it creates problems later.

Having anyone be the player, though, is fine by me. I'm an egotistical controller who doesn't manage to screw things up (often, anyways) unless the player asks for something that you can't do in 30 seconds because the game is very unpredictable.

the biggest problem with playing with strangers is most of the time they want to kill/rape anyone they meet and/or strip naked. it's so unoriginal.

yeah but the game is in its very earliest stages (in regards to the community). there's yet to be a 'Don Quixote' or 'Birth of a Nation' that really defines what this system is capable of. maybe there never will be, i dunno, but the first thing most people think when they boot up the game is "haha okay how can i fuck with the other guy?" i mean that's usually my first instinct too. i'm looking forward to the results of this contest to see what people can really do (or on the other hand i'm dreading it because i'm scared everything is going to be really stupid and banal, but i'm like 75% sure that won't happen)
(ps im reinstalling steam right now so we can play i've been meaning to do that for a while anyway)

well i've already played this a ton so your best bet instead of getting steam is to download hamachi

sleep is death requires you to connect directly to another user's IP and hamachi lets that happen very easily because connecting to someone via IP is just about a pain in the ass.

sorry for putting you in circles, christo. just get hamachi and do this

Pretty much. I've been following this for a while now, and I think it'll get to the point where the community is both mature and inventive enough for this to work in the right way and create amazing experiences. The only problem I can see is the typical online douchebags who just use the action tags to 'Rape' or 'Kill' everything and then call it dumb because its slow paced. Once they've all moved on to Halo: Reach, it'll be golden.

I think the best way to describe this is King's Quest except 100% dynamic and open ended.

I read through this one story about a guy in a desert. It was hilarious.

He goes inside, sleeps, and then exits at night - but the controller forgot the erase the sun. So the guy is like, "That moon look awfully like a sun..."

And then the controller changes it to a moon and says:

[After a moment your eyes adjust to the pale yet contrasted light of the moon..]

Haha, it was funny.

UPDATE:
the story competition ended several hours ago but still no word on the winners. i'm sure i didn't win because mine was an unfinished piece of shit but i'm the first person to use splash pages and options menus so go me , hopefully i'll at least get a runner-up prize of a free download.
also sidtube.com IRC is getting pretty hopping some of us are starting to become friends so go on over if you want to join in
http://sidtube.com/social/irc/
also the official version of the game is either out now or about to come out so if you missed the chance to pre-order, now you can jump on the gravy train and find the community already waiting for you
