The episode was just really boring and over-schmaltzy in general though. Even the final scene, which was almost awesome, got ruined by the damn tear.

Just watched the Downton Abbey special and that was not only a billion times better than DW but also one of the best single episodes of any TV show this year if not THE best.

But yeah, I'm not as much of an anti-Moffat as a lot of people have become but I'm with Bown on this one. That episode was pretty ropey.

Also, yeah Midnight was one of the very best. Probably my favourite, or perhaps second to one of the finales.

Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways and Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords*, at least, were both miles better. Big Bang is alright but it's a great example of Moffat writing an entire story out of one line he thought was super cool (old/new/borrowed/blue) and (once again) relying on his oh-so-clever timey wimey concepts to bowl people over and hide the fact that, when it comes down to it, Moffat, while he's a great ideas man, is just a terrible, terrible storyteller.

What's funny is Doctor Who wouldn't even make it into my top 20 shows yet it's the show I always end up having debates about

I saw them at EDGEFEST (so many terrible bands).

They won that "be on the cover of The Rolling Stone" thing.

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Have you fucking watched Last of the Time Lords recently?

I won't touch Dobby Doctor. Instead, first I'll lol at you calling Moffat's use of time travel a gimmick, and then I'll point out the big plot device in LotTL was everyone on Earth saying "Doctor" at the same time. SHITEY WRITEY.

I MEAN I SUPPOSE THIS IS PART OF THE JESUS DOCTOR THING BUT IT'S REALLY FUCKING STUPID AND A BIG SYMPTOM OF DAVIES' WRITING.

The Doctor goes somewhere -> interesting plot is set up -> the stupidest possible resolution happens and ruins the whole story

SEE: FUCKING WATERS OF MARS

If you had said Utopia I would have accepted it as a legitimate answer. SORRY BRO.

And Bad Wolf was, on the whole, a pretty stupid episode, like much of Davies' writing. A whole lot of fluff and not a lot of content. Rose absorbing the time stream and that is cool, but an episode and a half of "LOL WE'RE STUCK IN GAME SHOWS" is stupid.

I like Doctor Who because it's about crazy adventures in time and space and most of Davies' stories were 20% adventure, 80% milling about or ruining good plot ideas (WATERS OF MARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Also, LET'S BRING IN SOME BIG BAD THATS BEEN DISAPPEARED FOR A WHILE. OH NO THE DALEKS ARE BACK. OH NO THE CYBERMEN ARE BACK. OH NO THE MASTER IS BACK. GOOD THING WE KILLED THE LAST OF THE DALEKS/CYBERMEN/TIME LORDS.

OH NO THEY'RE BACK IN THE NEXT SEASON FINALE WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED THIIIIIIS

Here are some other episodes I like from Series 1-4:
The Empty Child 2-parter
Girl in the Fireplace (2-parter, I believe?)
Blink
Silence in the Library 2-parter
Dalek (Fucking rules)

and without having an episode list in front of me that's pretty much all I can name

Yeah, I have to agree with this. As I watched it for the first time, I thought it was all a bit hit-and-miss but felt pretty certain that there would be an epic conclusion at the end, so I was still pretty engrossed in it all. There wasn't though. And yeah, Waters of Mars had a lot of pointless filler in there. It suddenly got great when the evacuation started (the moment when that guy got a solitary drop on his face was nicely done) but it's just a real shame it took so long to get there.

In my opinion, Moffat and Davies both did some brilliant episodes for Eccleston and Tennant. Once Davies left, however, I think it all took a turn for the worse. Series 5 wasn't so bad but after that there were way more bad episodes. Weird plotlines became more common (and I do mean weird, not complicated - I've seen enough time travel sci-fi to not get weirded out by paradoxes) and there were some really dark undertones from time to time. The only Moffat episodes I thoroughly enjoyed in the latest series were A Good Man Goes to War and the two mini-episodes he did for Comic Relief, Space and Time.

Haha, if there's one thing Doctor Who fans can agree on it's that Doctor Who fans can never agree on anything

I hate Moffat too but consider A Good Man Goes to War to be the worst episode of the revival by far, in terms of it being as bad as Let's Kill Hitler/The Wedding of River Song but not entertaining in its supreme idiocy like those two

I'll type more nonsense later on but I will say both showrunners so far have committed some pretty bad sins, and both could have done with someone else editing them really, but of the two Moffat's sins are far more egregious, but also technically subtler (Davies' bad ideas slap you in the face, whereas Moffat's bubble under the surface while he slaps you in the face with his cool concepts). It's kind of easy to see why so many people are like FUCK DAVIES ONLY WATCH FROM SERIES 5 ONWARDS, but that makes it all the more frustrating.

Haha, I'm pretty sure I just get excited when there's a whole load of alien species in one episode, which is why I liked the The Pandorica Opens a whole lot more than Big Bang.

Don't get me wrong, I don't judge an episode's quality by whether or not there's a Judoon strolling across the background. It's just an added bonus when lots of different shit gets involved.
