just started regularly visiting reddit about a week ago.

certainly some interesting stuff to find through there. however i can't stand the comments, and how much everyone cares about upvotes / downvotes / karma / jokingly cares about karma / etc

"Why is everyone downvoting this? Its true! Have my upvote good sir!"

ugh shut up

People love feeling in control of things, even if it's just a pointless vote on a website.

Reddit annoys me too, there's sometimes really great stuff, but there's also waaaaaaay too many ragecomics about being an introvert. We get it, nerds, y'all like lazy comedy.

Rage comics would be good if a.) they weren't poorly drawn pieces of crap (duh) b.) they weren't typically about the most mundane subjects/events. They're a funny concept... everyone's faces and emotions are about the same. So it's really easy to relate... but they just look like shit because people are more concerned with getting the idea out there than executing them well. So any jackoff that can open MSpaint is an author or something. ffuuuu

Notch wrote a blog post about how that is a total scam.

http://notch.tumblr.com/post/8386977075/its-a-scam

That kinda came across as him being an asshole to me. Yeah the guys left out all the negative points and they want funding and it isn't revolutionary, but so what? Its not a SCAM, its an advertisement, you douche.

Minecraft is a scam.

"MAJOR UPDATE COMING SOON!!"

"Sorry I was playing xbox too much, check out this sweet new track from my shitty music composer! He's the best! The update will come when I get it finished."

"OK guys I had to go on a trip for the last 3 weeks, sorry for the lack of updates. I hope to release the update later this week."

*15 days later*

"Update is live now! CHECK IT OUT!"

*Update is filled with so many bugs that Bukkit admins refuse to update their product because they know that Notch will need to release a bugfix update in the next day or two. Notch doesn't release any form of a bugfix for 3 full weeks. Update also only includes like 10 new things that nobody cares about. Great, now you need a separate tool to shear sheep. I'm totally going to play this game a whole lot more now because the one thing holding me back was how I could sheer sheep with my hands.*

Yeah, the shears are fucking stupid. If I was washed up on a Minecraft island IRL, I would not waste time making shears. If anything, I'd use my axe or sword to do the job, but I'd be perfectly willing to rip the wool off using my bare hands if my survival depended on it.

"But wait! You can also use them to destroy leaf blocks and place them where you please!"
"Really? OK, cool. Maybe they're not so useless after all. I could make a hedge maze or a - ... Where did that leaf block go?"
"Oh yeah, leaf decay still acts on placed leaves."

You still can, you just have to kill the sheep and you can only get one wool.

Yeah, but the amount of wool on a sheep shouldn't vary depending on what tool is used to remove it.

Edit: Yeah, I edited that a bit.

No, but the amount you're able to get off should be more if you're using the right tool. If you were just ripping it off with your bare hands or with an axe you'd only be able to get sloppy chunks, while with the correct tool you'd be able to get it all off. I'm not saying he couldn't have spent his time making a more fun update, I'm just saying that it makes a lot of sense for the realism of the world.

Its a scam if people are investing in it based on that video, which is their goal, because they are being misled into giving their money away. Right now it can create a very pretty landscape, populated by a lot of recycled objects which aren't moving at all, because actually animating this stuff is incredibly impractical. It is tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars away from actually being viable as a game technology.

It doesn't help that the video is also kind of pretentious as hell (in the very literal sense, of being riddled with pretense). They take a great deal of time pointing out the silly things that "polygon games" do, followed by a comparison to their clearly better looking technology, but it starts to lose ground when its pointed out that in the "polygon games", things are actually fucking moving. The comment of "Look how ridiculous this is, I'm sure in the future our children will laugh at these dumb resource-cutting measures" is especially aggravating, because after spending so much time showing you how much today's games chintz on making the game look good all the time, they neglect to mention how their system can't make things that move yet. IE, they are laughing at the entire video game industry when they literally cannot yet make a fucking video game.

Oh, and then they want hundreds of thousands of dollars.
