Provoke: to call forth an action or a feeling; to provide a stimulus.

Evoke: to conjure; to recreate with imagination.

Invoke: to make an earnest request or petition for support; to call forth by incantation.

You see? The difference hardly jumps out at you. The question to ask yourself is what is the nature of this new element? (Caveat: These are my interpretations of how this all shakes out; I have not substantiated any of these opinions with a higher authority. So, feel free to argue with me on any of these points.)

Provoke generally has an earthly bent—it’s the physical irritation of a fragile situation. It’s threatening a ticklish person with a feather or introducing a bull into a china shop; it also directs attention to the results of the provocation.

I could tell by they way he swayed and slurred that he’d had plenty to drink; but I thought I’d provoke the situation with just one more shot of whiskey and then sit back and watch the train wreck.

Evoke, I think, has a more ethereal quality to it—you evoke a thought or a memory or a feeling, the results of such action being less tangible.

The sour funk of cigarette smoke and stale beer evokes pleasant memories of dark, divey old-man bars in the Tenderloin.

Invoke I see as being more pragmatic. It’s when you call upon an intangible yet heady concept or idea to serve your current purpose.

She caught him red-handed: he was naked on the couch with an economy-size box of peeps on his naked lap, a dozen Penthouse magazines, and three or four empty bottles of Two-Buck Chuck scattered around him; he looked her in the eye, invoked the Fifth Amendment, and went back to watching Family Guy reruns on the CW.

avert - to turn away, to prevent from happening.
subvert - to overthrow, destroy, or sabotage.
invert - to reverse the position, turn upside-down.

I get confused on tvtropes all the time...

I consider myself a nihilist but I'm not compelled to self-destruct as this guy apparently was. A living nihilist is a walking contradiction, according to the author. I dunno, I'm a little more content with meaningless suffering for a single life. I'll have 50 billion years to be dead before the universe dies. That Buddhist wisdom stays with ya

I find all of their videos really annoying.

But it's interesting seeing the food they make.

But the main host is terrible.
