I like that whoever wrote it felt the need to include some random tweet he made about The Matrix in the "references" section.

Wow, Anthony Bourdain? Really? He had like the best life ever... I think he's definitely chilling on a beach somewhere with Tupac.

I had a big response but I accidentally refreshed the page and lost it. Why do you say he had a terrible and empty lifestyle?

No Reservations was my go-to show to throw on when hanging out with friends and family, like no matter who I was hanging out with watching No Reservations was always cool. It's engaging on so many different levels. I don't even care about food, but it makes me want to.

I read Kitchen Confidential and enjoyed it.

I haven't watched Parts Unknown but I've always planned to.

I honestly could not think of how his life could be more full, which is what makes this so perplexing. Whenever I watch it with someone the topic of how amazing his life must be always comes up, and it's always agreed upon: the best. Is the ideal life, within our collective cultural ideals, accounting for richness of the peaks and valleys, totally hollow? Or is he ultimately broken inside and was able to mask that from the world for decades in very raw and intimate settings? Or did he just get a dark doctor note and wanted to conclude his legacy like a rockstar, like (his frequently referenced idol) Hunter S. Thompson? Or was it a faked death so that he can totally retire from fame? Or was it murder?

I get Robin Williams, I am not at all surprised by Philip Seymour Hoffman, but this is really wild. I bet the full story, which we might never get to hear, must be bonkers.

I hate Anthony Bourdain for the sole reason that his death is getting this much attention.

Funny thing - how rich, famous, how much your travel, eat, fuck, drink, laugh or smile - or succeed in general - doesn't cure depression.

Almost like maybe it's an actual mental illness that can't be cured by good food and a positive attitude...

Crazy to think that...

But no it must be MURDER or CANCER.

who would have thought that a life of godless hedonism would lead to suicide?

But he's never once seemed depressed from what I've seen, and it seems strange to me that somebody with such severe depression would be able to work so much. But ok, maybe he was able to perfectly mask it, he also left behind a young child. One would have to be extremely selfish and irresponsible to do that, and he does not give off that vibe at all. He seems super conscientious and empathetic.

didn't anthony bourdain used to have a pretty serious drug problem? i never really watched any of his shows but i was watching it one time and i think he was talking about how he used to do some kind of hard drug, crack or heroin or something. he was mentioning how he was spending tons of money on a drug habit and it ruined his life, before he turned things around and became a tv host.

i would imagine there was probably some underlying mental health issues if he turned to hard drugs in the first place, plus he probably carries around a lot of guilt from things that he did during that period of his life. so it's not surprising

what gets me is that he didn't turn his life around until his mid-30's. had he been famous during his teens it wouldn't have seemed surprising, almost normal

yeah I remember a story came out Michael Phelps the Olympic swimmer was depressed and suicidal after each Olympic games. If, on top of everything else, setting a world-record number of world records (probably) doesn't prevent depression... then maybe there's something else going on
