i also should point out that i might be more used to nainan-esque shenanigans, being myself from montgomery county, MD (where he's from) and having grown up constantly surrounded by preening, teacher-pleasing, overachieving asians (and jews and WASPs) who will basically do anything to confer status points upon themselves without actually producing anything of significance. one of the big brags i remember kids making in high school was along the lines of. "oh man, i dont even work hard at ALL, but i totally got a 4.0 gpa last semester." another was, "oh bro, i took the SAT while high and still got a 1550." it's that kind of thing, and this nainan guy has it in spades. not saying i advocate this silliness, but i'm so used to it that it's hard for me not to see it as run-of-the-mill bullshit

so upon hindsight, i guess people aren't really used to this kind of thing, and they're mistaking it for mental disorders or psychopathy or whatever, but it's really just how asian upper-middle-class status-strivers really are, and we're in the rare position of seeing one of them work as a comedian

I like that theory izak! For all we know that comedian doesn't really believe his jokes are funny but performs them anyway because he knows that type of clean humor fits the corporate event mold perfectly and the demand is being unmet by all the "edgy" comedians. Maybe he really is treating it strictly like a business and is not even really passionate about comedy but puts up the facade to keep landing gigs. Iirc, he even admits he was a six-figure computer businessman before doing comedy. Or maybe he is a comedy genius and can actually write better jokes than the other comedians making fun of him. But he is sticking to the dumbed down "I get my sushi @ the 711! lololol" humor at risk management seminars while continuing to rake in the cash.

It could all be a brilliant facade.
