i definitely think the guy isn't funny, and i would never pay to see him. but these guys are calling him out on absolutely nothing that literally any show biz person wouldn't do themselves. all show biz people lie about their age, make up fake names for themselves, do whatever else they need to do to get a gig

it's obvious that dan nainan has a career A) partly because he's from a well-connected, wealthy area and has rich people connections, and B) because he understands -- correctly -- that there's a huge demand for a clean, g-rated comic to play coat-and-tie events, and every other "serious" comedian wants to get rich and famous by keeping it real, or whatever, and that leaves open a huge untapped market.

nainan clearly isn't in this for the social status one gets among urbanites and white hipsters for being a brave truth-teller who gets to the truth of everything while swearing endlessly. he's in it for the money, and he thinks very logically, like a businessman. he doesn't treat stand-up as a deep art form, and he's partly right. it isn't, and it never should have been treated that way. he treats it purely as a business.

frankly i'm not seeing any legit grievances against the guy. it just looks like a lot of whiney, resentful losers who are annoyed that this is how the world works. you're in a capitalist market where lots of people want a clean-cut guy to tell jokes for a business conference (or whatever), and they're not interested in booking some loser who wants to work through his psychological issues using stand-up as his medium. i guess that guy could make the argument that capitalism is evil, and the government should pay all the comedians, but even then, no sane government would pay that loser anyhow.

i actually like dan nainan's troll letter that he sent everyone. if anything it made me respect him more

the problem is that he is basically just a marketer. he doesn't know shit about comedy, he just markets himself to make money. but then he will act like he's better than other comedy guys because of his success. but the truth is that he isn't even playing the same game as the guys he compares himself to. he is playing a purely business game, while others are in it for the comedy.

i think its fine to do this for a living, but to not admit basic stuff ever and continue to compare yourself against actual comedians is lame.

this same sort of thing holds true in any field. like if some pop musician like iggy azalea were to start flaunting how amazing of a musician they are by showing how much money they make vs some local jazz trio. well bad analogy but whatever

the same is also true when everyone acts like a little bitch about carrot top or gallagher or dane cook. these people are on some moral crusade to take down people who see a market and play to it.

i'm not saying i think nainan is great or that he's a wonderful person or whatever. he could be a total nutcase who goes around emailing people millions of times because he's mad they dont like him, or whatever they're accusing him of doing. but is he really any worse than someone like bill hicks, who spent his career running around acting like a dickhead, getting drunk onstage, rocking around in a fetal position talking about how the human race should be exterminated? all of these people are losers as far as i'm concerned. it's clear to me that people who perform for a living deeply need ego-validation, whether they're funny or not
