it says it was thumbs up on MSN. general internet slang coming from MSN as an emoticon that doesn't work anywhere else? thats kinda weird

i mean other slang makes sense. this doesn't so i automatically start picturing what it represents. for me i see a butt wearing a thong.
works on facebook chat too

me and a friend of mine still always use 8-) to mean rolling eyes because it did that on MSN even though it just creates a style thing on everything modern

MSN is a bedrock of modern culture

and as far as the Memphis thing goes, I think it's pretty much fine to want to downplay a memorial to the guy who founded the KKK, but you can just up and move someone's remains like that? and apparently they were moved there against the wishes of his will to begin with? what? also, they decided the best thing to rename the park to was "Health Sciences Park?"

I read it as they were moving them back to the original place to respect his wishes? Am I getting this wrong

yeah it sounds that way. although obviously their real motivation here isn't to respect his wishes. but still, seems hard to argue with given the weird circumstances

yeah it's like simultaneously they're moving it to honor his wishes but also to appease the liberals, but also sorta to make money

Memphis City Council members explained that if the resolution and ordinance are approved, the statue would be relocated at no cost to the city. Buyers are already interested in purchasing it.
but they're also doing it in spite of confederate apologists who don't want the statue moved for confederate apologist reasons, despite the fact that other confederate apologists (including the mayor) think it's a great idea

also another interesting part of the story is just what a bizarre story Nathan Bedford Forrest's life was
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Bedford_Forrest
had no education but nonetheless became a big-time plantation owner, then dropped it all to enlist as a private in the confederate army, then rose to general.
Quote:
Forrest posted ads to join his regiment for "men with good horse and good gun" adding "if you wanna have some fun and to kill some Yankees".[15]
At six feet, two inches (1.88 m) tall and 210 pounds (95 kg; 15 stone), Forrest was physically imposing and intimidating, especially compared to the average height of men at the time. He used his skills as a hard rider and fierce swordsman to great effect. (He was known to sharpen both the top and bottom edges of his heavy saber.)
Historians have evaluated contemporary records to conclude that Forrest may have killed more than 30 enemy soldiers[16] with saber, pistol and shotgun.
he also formed a Special Forces confederate cavalry unit, and had a violent exchange with one of his subordinates that ended with Forrest being shot and then stabbing the guy to death, and then
Quote:
In the battle of Fallen Timbers, he drove through the Union skirmish line. Not realizing that the rest of his men had halted their charge when reaching the full Union brigade, Forrest charged the brigade single-handedly, and soon found himself surrounded. He emptied his Colt Army revolvers into the swirling mass of Union soldiers and pulled out his saber, hacking and slashing. A Union infantryman fired a musket ball into Forrest's spine with a point-blank musket shot, nearly knocking him out of the saddle. Forrest grabbed an unsuspecting Union soldier, hauled him onto his horse to use as a shield, dumped the man once he had broken clear and was out of range, then galloped back to his incredulous troopers.[20] A surgeon removed the musket ball a week later, without anesthesia, which was unavailable.

then later he participated in an insane massacre of surrendering black troops

My loss was about twenty killed. It is hoped that these facts will demonstrate to the Northern people that negro soldiers cannot cope with Southerners.' Subsequently Forrest made a report in which he left out the part which shocks humanity to read."
and then after the war he founded the kkk vv

and also an incredibly intense-looking guy

I'm in favor of this kinda stuff in general (the confederate flag is a symbol of treason, fuck that) but I'm honestly kinda worried we're gonna get the "martyr effect" going with the confederate flag and turn it into a more powerful symbol than it ever was before. and the really extreme versions of this (removing civil war games from the ios store and stuff) are pretty obviously ridiculous. ugh. and stuff like this. seems very misguided to me, and reminiscent of the attitudes toward nazi flags in europe

edit: only just saw that last post but yeah, as far as symbols of hatred go, nathan bedford forrest is a hella interesting one at least. he basically denounced the klan and did what I would consider mad progressive stuff for the time at the end of his life

i agree, and i think it's a pretty disheartening state of affairs that monuments are being dismantled / vandalized because they bring up uncomfortable questions about our own nation's history. sweeping this shit under the rug by getting rid of some statues or whatever is not going to fix racism.
that being said though, flying the battle flag is pretty stupid especially because it really isn't even historically relevant in the sense intended. i wouldn't call it an act of hate but it is definitely an act of defiance: of government, of status quo, and of logic
