Damn, this music genre "nasheed", that ISIS is into, is really sweet. It's rather meditative than militaristic. Although they don't call it music, since music is haram, they call it "prayer" instead, but hey. I like their excuse for percussion by having gunfire sounds from MGs.

man every once in a while you hit a wikipedia article on a major event that is still terrible

this is on the Sinking of the RMS Lusitania, a major event that we all learn about in high school:
Quote:
There were very few survivors from the forward two boiler rooms, but they (the survivors?) did report the ship's boilers did not explode; they (the survivors or the boilers?) were also under extreme duress in those moments after the torpedo's impact, however
what the heck, like teacher corrections in the article itself

Fuck that person. The first one is obviously the survivors anyway because they mention the boilers later in the sentence. Christ...

when someone asks, "can you watch my stuff for me?" how do they know the person whom they ask is trustworthy?

haha, Izak MD. that Truman Show clip made you think of Jim Carey in Dumb & Dumber, especially the scene where he asks an old lady to watch his stuff for him, where he then gets robbed.

i'm onto you!

name it "Recording of an accident I was in today" and it would have topped at like 500 votes max
yeah that's the thing. It's because one title elicits an emotional response before a user even clicks, then that emotional response is validated after the user views the content. An alternate title may make you feel nothing, so it is less interesting, even though the content is exactly the same.

Another example... when pictures of cute pets make it to the front page, the caption is always something like, "Found this little guy scrapping around my front yard! Reddit, meet Faggot" The title tricks your brain into feeling like you're meeting a puppy, and not just looking at a .jpg. So it gets way more votes. "My new puppy" just doesn't make you feel anything. Two identical pictures with different captions won't fare the same for that reason.

It's the same when pictures of people with celebrities make it to the front page. It's because the link's title makes you feel like it's your friend, and not some random stranger, meeting Bill Nye or Neil Degrasse Tyson or Guy Who Inadvertently Became a Reddit Meme. "A person met a celebrity" is boring.

A picture on the front page right now is of an amputee, with the title, "6 months since injury. They got a piece of me, just a piece. " You feel sad at first, he had a life changing injury. But then you feel admiration because his spirits are high. Then you get a look at the dude and it plucks at your heart strings... Upvote!

alright im lookin at yung leans videos after BR and happyjuice have recommended him.

i cant finish a whole song, im just skipping around.

my question is: how does this shit go viral? like, how does it happen? is this entirely manufactured, or what? there seems to be a sort of "quality" for these kinds of things. i can maybe sketch out a rough template: viral stuff like this is typically very cute and it manages to be entirely devoid of content. this 'yung lean' guy throws a bunch of shit that random people can relate to in a gigantic smorgasbord of nonsense. then the nonsense is enough for people to find it continually alluring. the stupid people can look at a song like 'oreo milkshake' and say "oh i like oreo milkshakes, they sure are great!" or "oh kyoto, that's a japanese word, i think i want to click that because japanese things are interesting!" then once it skyrockets, it becomes a curiosity. a living rorschach blot test. everyone is left to collectively ponder over it and use it as a platform to ask whatever dumbass question they want. like i haven't even checked, but i bet anything there's a Salon or Slate editorial that's like "Yung Lean talks about slapping 'his hos' and consuming cocaine in his raps. Is it postmodern meta-criticism of harmful rap stereotypes, or is he just being misogynist?" the fact that it's all just mindless nonsense doesn't hurt either, because that leaves people like me to watch it, say "what the fuck is this bullshit," and then complain about it being bullshit, which inevitably brings in more views.

all of which leads me to think:

i think if we put our heads together, we could probably brainstorm some sort of similar project, use dirty tricks to get it 'talked about,' and make it go viral and somehow make money from it.

its super popular. and many viewers probably think all the sharks' (the "judges" on this show) interactions are natural.

the cutting is also nuts, as with all american TV like this. sometimes one of the sharks will clearly be about to go into an actually somewhat interesting explanation of something, and they'll edit out the entire explanation to make them instead say a dumb one-line response like "This is good".

i don't mind the show nearly as much as almost all other shows on basic cable. you see some interesting inventors/ideas, and it can be interesting seeing why they are/aren't funded. its still bad mainstream TV but i wouldn't mind it on in the background.
