actually i was probably more like 8-9

the lego catalogues were always pretty mindblowing. you'd see these amazing, vast landscapes with medieval castles and dungeons and dragons and wizards and shit....

or these amazing space stations with ice planets and neon colors and insane esoteric spaceships....

or large pirate ships with savage islanders and elaborate ewok-like jungle fortresses....

and then you'd get like, the town stuff. the most boring possible buildings one can imagine. oh, there's our police station. oh, there's the fire station. there's the pizzeria.

but the one that really took the cake was this weird vacation island thing they did, which was so gay.

i mean here, just look at it:

that's not some bullshit trolling job, that's from a real catalogue. in the 90s, i guess lego thought it would be smart to have a bunch of dudes with cowboy hats and moustaches hanging out on some pink beach island patio thing.

but the truth is, i secretly wanted that shit anyhow, i pretty much wanted everything in those catalogues

my sister would always opt for the more girly lego sets, I had just as much fun with them. then again I would also play with her barbies so there's that.

I think that pizza set is rare in that it's not very interchangeable, there's lots of small lego sets where you can build like 5 totally different things out of the same set, and that's just the blue-prints they provide on the package. it's not so much about having weird obscure pieces from a bunch of sets, you just need a good enough variety and fair number of duplicate pieces. having a bunch of sets just gives you the benefit of having say a stockpiles of different kinds of wheels/hinges/windshield/ computer panels. etc.... basically like the icing on the cake.

i loved this not just becaues it was a sweet temple with lots of COOL TRAPS. but also cause it came with so many cool pieces for general lego fun, like the coffins, skeletons, zombie pharoah, various weapons and SWEET TRUCK. and don't even get me started on that chain on the front of the truck. oh man i loved that chain prop. i used it so much. you could attach it to people's hands so i'd have them dangling things over cliffs and stuff with the chain WOW SO COOL

Man, I had a lot of these. I played with the pirate one all the time. Definitely one of the best toy brands ever.

I loved how they used a relatively limited number of types of pieces to make pretty much everything. This one was a good example:

Gonk droid was a postbox, legs of that spider droid were swords and those green things next to Jabba were minifigure heads.

Anybody remember this classic scene from Home Alone 2?

Well, I definitely do!

I mean, suppose you wanted to sing Cool Jerk in the shower, but you didn't want to get your iPod all wet when you used it as the means to transmit the song to the shower. Well, all you gotta do is find an AM/FM-only shower radio, and find a good FM transmitter to pair with your iPod in a place that is protected from the water of the shower, and find a reasonable distance to place it from the shower.

Oh, and if you wanna sing Cool Jerk by The Capitols like Uncle Frank was, you gotta find a copy of that song to place on the iPod. I mean, there is more to FM transmitter use than just providing iPod support for radios without AUX inputs, its also all about ensuring no wire entanglement, as well as having a water-resistant radio to hear the song on.

oh that looks more like the technic stuff

technic was intimidating to me as a youngster. it was like outer space stuff, i had no clue how to wrap my head around it. i was afraid of getting it.

I don't even remember that stuff being around when I was a kid. I feel like it didnt show up until I was like 13 years old. And by that point, whenever I saw it I was like, "pffft, if I wanted a robot toy, I'd just get a transformer."

Yeah, I feel like it sort of phased in really gradually. I never had any with motors and stuff but I definitely had a Technic set. It was basically just like Meccano or something - just more types of pieces to build with. Weird joints and axels and shit.

Oh wait, I was looking at that picture on my phone and I thought it was a Technic Lego thing. Now that I'm looking at it on my laptop I see that it's actually kinda cool.

Forgot all about those catalogs, they were amazing. Pretty impressive how much effort they out into making them look like that.

I had a few Lego Technic sets when i was a bit older, they took longer to build and often had working "ropes", mechanics and pneumatic parts which were ace.

Someone made a car with working gears which is pretty mad
