The picture is a dead giveaway it's pure nonsense. A billion light years across and 6-10 billion light years away? Those are intergalactic distances. So how can the dark patch be in front of a cluster of stars?? If that were real, you'd find it in a picture like the Hubble deep field.

I don't think it's meant to be in front of a cluster of stars. I think it's meant to be some weird gap.

But yeah, sounds like bullshit - bad picture or otherwise.

That's kind of misleading too. That says a giant void, 1000 times bigger than usual, is a possible explanation for a cold spot in the CMB, but not a very favorable one. Not that a supervoid definitely exists or has been observed.

Making predictions about the universe using the CMB is like calculating what an adult looks like based on a baby photo.
