I don't know what they're protesting, but why does it matter the teargas was made in the USA?

because that was a brutal crackdown of a pieceful protest and the people were literally drowned with teargas. it should be in peoples mind where that crap comes from. not saying that germany is particularly any better. we love selling tanks to dictators that they can use to shoot and run over their own people with.

I think criticizing the USA for exporting tear gas is going a little bit far. But wow yeah, crazy. What are these protests about?

How is that going a bit far? The US exports its tools of control to other governments. It's the same kind of tear gas America sells Israel to disrupt protests, and there have been fatal casualties from it.

Well... America is the primary producer of tear gas... so where else are they going to get it from?

I don't want to get into a debate over this but I think you're missing the point, which is that if a country provides weapons to another country/party, it should be held to a certain standard of responsibility. Yes they could have maybe gotten the tear gas from somewhere else instead, but does that automatically absolve the country that actually sold it to them from all responsibility? Anyway, the US provides Israel with a bunch of money to use on buying weapons and other shit.

and this is the same sort of example in Turkey, a gvmnt is buying American stuff and using it on protestors. I mean I have no idea what this protest is about, but just from looking at what those pictures show...

I get that, I do. Weapons have to come from somewhere. And weapons are private business in the US, so they can sell wherever - and I understand that sucks that people sell violence and war for profit. Sucks.

But I mean... police gotta deter somehow. Tear gas is horrible, but it beats them all gunning the protesters down with Russian made rifles, or throwing German made grenades. And nobody is postinh photos of the Swedish made fire hoses for water canons (albeit they are much less harmful than tear gas, which is probably the most lethal non lethal deterrent).

That's all I'm saying.

yeah, unless you think using tear gas is just never acceptable, I dunno why you'd blame america for allowing it to be sold. it's not like the turkish government is iran and should just never be dealt with either.

yeah, teargas is fucking abhorrent, the way they use it makes it condemnable.

the protests were initially about the construction of a new mall in istanbul that would replace a old and prestigious municipal park. yesterday they wanted to chop off the first trees for that and a group of peaceful protesters blockaded them. after they were all brutally beaten, peppersprayed, teargassed and detained, the protests turned into a nationwide demonstration against the government of recep tayyip edrogan, the prime minister of turkey. people were chanting "government resign".

What if they did have guns and they killed some people though? Would you be like, "Well, at least we're not selling them artillery." "At least its not nuclear weapons."

You can justify anything by saying, "well, at least it wasn't [something worse]"

yeah but like, is that even smart to do, to sell it to them? protesters get attacked, injured, killed by this stuff and then they pick up the can and it says "MADE IN THE U.S." in big ass letters.
