Yeah, he actually does a pretty subtle job I think, which is saying something because he doesn't stretch himself much in any other roles. As it is he seems like a much more functional Clinton, and even though there are obviously jokes directly about that character, it seems more realistic than distasteful. At least that's my feeling. Not super funny, but definitely entertaining, and heartwarming at times, and Karl Pilkington is a surprisingly good actor when he's pretty much playing himself.

And what do you mean by "final nail" in his coffin? Is his career not going well right now?

nah he's doing great, just personal opinion
imo he's been going downhill since about his third standup show, he hasn't done anything even nearly as good as the office/extras in a very long time now

I love Derek. The pilot in particular was fantastic. I love Karl Pilkington's character too, how he's just constantly telling all the annoying characters to fuck off or whatever. The media were straight on the attack when they heard about the show, before the pilot had even been shown. Definitely turned out to be quite a respectable piece, I think.

Derek is a great show. Really sweet and heartfelt an stuff. But sometimes it goes a bit too far into schmaltz, especially with the music, and the plots are cheesy but it doesn't really matter. Still my favourite Gervais thing since extras
