i dont get how sergio leone co-wrote and directed stuff like The Good the Bad and the Ugly without understanding how to speak english. like obviously he had translators and i see that he could speak french which one of the actors somewhat knew, but still... how the heck do you direct an all-english movie and make sure the actors are speaking how you'd want them too, being sure the english lines were translated in ways that captured his original meaning, etc

Because A Fistful of Dollars was an Italian/German/Spanish co-production, there was a significant language barrier on the set. Leone did not speak English, and Eastwood communicated with the Italian cast and crew mostly through stuntman Benito Stefanelli, who also acted as an unlicensed interpreter for the production and would later appear in Leone's other pictures. Similar to other Italian films shot at the time, all footage was filmed silent and the dialogue and sound effects were dubbed over in post-production.[2]

i didnt realize the shots were recorded entirely silent. i mean its real obvious that the voice is dubbed and a lot of the sounds are dubbed. but i figured the simpler sounds were live. THATS A LOT O DUBBIN!
