but yeah like any time i see lots of users on a site saying its insecure and that everyone's getting hacked, it never affects me, and it always turns out that their shit was stolen from one of the 500 other websites that they use the same username and password on, and the password is like "cheese"

I always worried that something like this would happen to Valve&Steam

But after that Sony thing last year they added the Steam Guard protection which should be pretty much safe!

i bet enough people use the same password for their email as they do for steam for the same mass-complaint of hacking to happen. but valve is very good about returning hacked accounts and returning shit that the hackers stole from their inventory, even game-specific stuff
