Woah, I thought Rockstar made LA Noire. I was successfully fooled by the "Rockstar Games PRESENTS..." bit.

I feel ashamed cause I hate when that stuff fools people. Like I remember some people paying attention to District 9 because they thought Peter Jackson made it (Peter Jackson Presents), that annoyed me

ive been duped

Yeah they love shamelessly plastering the big name all over a product like that. I remember people asking me if I'd seen Tarantino's new film, Hostel.

LOL or my brother said spielbergs new show .. I'm sure he just produced or something useless. Eh I guess that counts more than "presents" but still HE'S NOT DIRECTING.

Listing someone as a Producer REALLY gets people. A lot of people don't even know that someone can be listed as a "Producer" and do absolutely NOTHING aside from throw some cash at the movie... many seem to not even know the difference between a "producer" and a "director".

this drives me nuts

Actually the producers control most of the creative aspect of the film.
The director is really just focused on getting the performance out of his actors.

For example, I could make a movie, but not want to direct it.
That doesn't mean it's not my movie.

I'll be credited as producer, or a "Produced by" credit.
My movie, my concept, my idea - somebody else directed.

Producers are the most powerful part of the film, next to the executives who are really just there to stifle and budget, and can do significant damage because of it.

Some of the movies you guys are thinking of have the "BIG NAME presents" attached to it. In this case, to get a "presents" credit, they are basically agreeing to promote the film and be a spokesperson for it. Like a PETER JACKSON SEAL OF APPROVAL, for example.

Edit:

Here: http://www.producersguild.org/?page=coc_tmp

The requirements for a Produced by credit. You'll notice it requires a great deal of creative input.

It's funny, because a lot of people give all film credit to the director, who in a lot of cases really didn't do ALL that much. Generally, you'll see their names as a producer and director, or even writer, then you know it's really their baby.

So yeah.

"Thoughts that were important to the kids of 1992"
"News coverage of the AIDS crisis"

Edit: And yeah, producers actually do shit. It's executive producers that often do nothing but throw money at a project. Heck, I'm an executive producer of a web podcast because I donated.

You are right, every time I see this, it is Executive Producer. But I know that I have seen quite a few things where a big name is slapped onto something as an "Executive Producer" when clearly it was just to increase interest.

Yeah usually it'll be noted as "PRESENTS" which is really just the marketing department trying to boost sales. They still are producers though, as the credits will show.

It's basically a "Your name means nothing, but I love your project, and I will get you major exposure - let me make your script into a movie, and you can direct."

Which is a good thing in my mind. District 9 would have been a low-budget underdog film had Peter Jackson not taken over it. Hell, it wouldn't exist.

How much creative input they chose to have is debatable and really on a film-to-film basis.
