Apple needs to change their update system.

For iTunes and Safari and all that shit. It makes no sense whatsoever. If you don't have the previous update, you can't install the newest update, and they don't make the updates you're missing easily available. WTF is that shit?

You can't use a new update to update old versions? Are you sure? I doubt they would make the update process confusing.

I install updates weekly and have never had this problem, nor do I think it exists

The runtime code in iTunes is obfuscated to hell so iPod/Phone compatibility stays locked to iTunes (among other things, such as disabling 3rd party mp3 player compatibility) - so it's no surprise you can't update it very easily. It really is cring-inducingly pathetic, although Apple have every right to do it.
