The Magic of the Internet
Dominator Dan's Avatar
Plot Summary:
A silent movie style animation in which a cyclops and a dragon get to know each other over the internet.

This is actually for uni so I had to make sure it looked as little dated as possible, in other words make it look like it wasn't even MADE in 3dmm.

Oddly enough the tutors and people in my class all like it and didn't even criticize the framerate or anything like that.

But yeah, enjoy!

Requirements

Frankie's 3dmm Expansion Pack 1

Very, very nice, Dan. I laughed out loud a couple times. You're usually the only 3DMM director that can do that. And this was so well animated that, yes, the frame rate seemed intentional. Like it's part of the rough, sketchy style.

Awesome job Dan. If I didn't see it on here I would've never even guessed that it was 3dmm.

It looks like I'm going to be in the minority here...well I suppose in both ethnicity and opinion.

I like the premise. It's a cute premise, I liked the animations and I liked the silent comedy approach. As an animation exercise, well done.

However, I think the writing was weak. Once you get past the dragon talking to an ogre gimmick, the jokes are really not that creative. I didn't laugh, because I saw every single one of the jokes coming. This movie really didn't contribute anything new to the whole "people lie on the internet" comedy.

Especially the final punchline I said to myself, "Please surprise me. Please don't be a photoshop joke."

Had this been directed by some relatively new person, I might be more positive. I think you're a good comedy writer, but this movie is not a good example of what you're capable of. The premise was there, but the execution was just sort of mediocre. It's not a bad movie by any means, but I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed.

The important thing isn't the premise, the important thing is how it comes across. This was endearing as hell.

Also, premise != gimmick.

hahaha

You really know how to give a movie the perfect flow of humor. I love how this perfectly captures the feel of meeting someone over AIM.

this was excellent. 10/10

That's what I'm saying though. I didn't really like how it came across. My initial thought was, "A movie about a dragon chatting with an ogre online...that hasn't been done before. I like it so far."

Creative idea. However, I felt the jokes cracked about the dragon and the ogre were kind of obvious, and just very predictable and lacked creativity. I feel like many people would have thought up those same jokes given the same premise, and I can't help but expect a little more outside the box thinking from Dan.

I just feel so disappointed when I watch comedies where I predict the punchline to every joke. Maybe I'm just being really hard on Dan. After the phenomenal "Handsome man in Australia", I can't help but expect absolute greatness from Dan in everything he does, and I feel like this just isn't it.

lol Ching I think you're going a bit overboard...this isn't a huge production like "Handsome Man", it's just a small little project, I in fact enjoyed its simplicity of humor despite the outrageous premise. That contrast was interesting. But either way this wasn't meant to be something so "outside the box" as Handsome Man, but just a nice, cute little short. I appreciated it. I know it's odd I'm defending it as I gave it the lowest score...but 74 is actually pretty good for me. It really just means "I liked it but I probably won't re-watch it anytime soon".

Ching, he made it for class (I'm assuming an animation class) so I'm sure the animation/style/execution were all way more important than the dialogue.

hahaha thanks guys, YOU TOO CHING, i see what you're saying, but yeah tbh time was of minimal quantity because this was a 5 week project, and only after 3 weeks did i realise i was going nowhere with my project so i decided on a little animation, so i did it all this week, and now i have one week remaining to put my sketchbook together to show the process, i might show you guys, it'll be a fun read for you lot cause it has plenty of screenshots of 3dmm and 7gen

however i'm aware that being strapped for time isn't really an excuse for writing predictable jokes, i dunno, it just felt like the right kinda humour for this sorta movie.

i actually do a graphic design course, which has nothing to do with animation normally, but hey, HOWS THAT FOR OUTSIDE THE BOX CHING? haha, nah we cool brother.

but yeah thanks again for all your feedback, it makes an awesomely eerie change to hear people describing my work as 'adorable' and 'endearing', as opposed to the usual 'scary' and 'what the fuck is wrong with you?'

Bloody hell Dan, that was incredible! Wouldn't have had a clue this was done on 3DMM, the frame rate complimented this perfectly. Outstanding as always.

Sounds about right. For a school assignment, I would imagine everyone was blown away by that. If Dan doesn't get an A for that, I'll be shocked.

However as a movie being released to the 3dmm community, I'd probably agree with your rating. I don't want people thinking that I hated the movie. I would give it like 3 out 5 stars which means I still like it. I just wish I could have given a higher rating to something released by Dan.

Loved it. Genius on the animation front and some pretty good comedy there. Like Ching, I saw a few of those coming, but I still laughed at them all.

Aha that was awesome, even though I'd seen half of it already it was fantastic when put together completely, it looked great and overall I hope to hell your tutors damned well appreciated it.
