Immunity starts out looking like it's going to be a one-off gag short. Tuna and Michael Sandford enter Dick Harris's mansion (or something, it's not really clear) hunting him down as punishment for voting for them in 3dmm popularity survivor. However, things end up getting a little more complicated than the premise would suggest.
Many viewers have noted that Tuna's animation in this movie is a big improvement over most of his past work, and I agree, it's quite well done. And as others have also pointed out, it does seem like somewhat of a throwback - but not because it seems dated or otherwise flawed. I think the main "throwback" quality of the scenery and animation is its straightforward realism. Tuna doesn't try to do anything flashy; the mansion scenes are made to look like rooms in a mansion, the giant penis is made to look like a penis, etc. This simple approach has been supplanted in a lot of recent movies by attempts to seem more artistic or expressionistic, so Tuna's work seems more in line with older movies, where making scenes as realistic as possible was still the usual goal. Although one might intuitively think that such a straightforward style might clash with the absurd subject matter, it works well, serving its purpose and not distracting from the action and jokes. Immunity is a "community movie," but it's notably lacking in community-based humor. What jokes it does have aren't exactly novel. Damage Jackal and Zach Dobbels are like Andres but less good at it. Tom Bown is gross and no one likes him. Jamie Chapman is a girl and therefore a slut. All these jokes have been overplayed on the board already and they felt kind of phoned in and unoriginal. By far the most interesting community content were the brief shots of the rooms during the fight with Andres...but they lasted under five seconds combined. More of that and less "Tom Bown lol" would have been nice. To be fair though, Dick Harris, while predictable, was amusingly done. As usual, Tuna does a great job of voice acting. The other actors hold their own but are overshadowed a bit. The sound levels were problematic at times: Sandford and especially Jamie were sometimes hard to hear. I feel like Immunity is sort of stuck in limbo between being a silly short and a more substantial community comedy: it's too long for the one and too uninspired for the other. While the animation and especially voice acting were strong, they weren't outstanding enough to carry the movie on their own. A community movie doesn't need to be some amazing piece of social criticism or anything, but it needs to delve a little deeper than "Tom Bown is gay" and other rehashes of tired board material to be effective. |
