Important news concerning Cade.

As many of you know, Cade is afflicted with a very, very rare (one in one hundred thousand births) and debilitating disorder known as Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita. This disability is incredibly difficult to live with - it affects the sufferers height drastically (people with SED are usually only 3-4ft tall) as well as causing clubfoot, arthritis, curvature of the spine, a cleft palate, a severely decreased lifespan, and problems related to hearing and vision.

On some counts, Cade has been luckier than most people who have to live with SED - because he has been active most of his life, with his swimming and so on (he holds two world records for disabled swimming at the moment, I believe) he is taller than most people with SED (around 5ft), and can still walk, whereas most others with the disorder are stuck in wheelchairs for life. But he still hasn't gotten off lightly. Cade also has a form of osteoporosis - his bones aren't exactly fragile, but they bend easily. Also, due to SED, he wasn't born with correctly formed hips, and combined with his osteoporosis, this means that his femurs are not correctly attached to the hip sockets, and can pop out quite easily, which makes it very difficult for him to walk for extended periods. Also, his spine is fragile, as he is missing a piece of vertebrae in the back of his neck - so whiplash would, in effect, kill him very easily.

In Cade's life, he's had over fifteen major operations, to fix everything from a cleft palate, to clubfeet, to a major operation when he was only 9 years old; he was in surgery for around ten hours while doctors sanded away bone in his hips to form proper hip joints. He has scars all over his body - the ones on his legs being as wide across as your thumb - and has endured more pain and suffering in his 19 years than anybody else here beyond all doubt - yet due to his perseverance, optimism and intelligence, he has become a role model for many, many people.

I know a lot of people here would scoff at that; yeah, we all know Cade's position in the community is to be the grumpy asshole who yells at people all the time. But this is just where he lets off steam - throughout all other areas of his life, the guy's a totally incredible inspiration. He's travelled the world - represented Australia in international Paralympic-level swimming - made some incredibly-talented music (it won't be long before he's signed to a record label, that's for sure) - and just recently even won the Order of North Queensland, thus making him the most well-known person in his part of his state (scanned newspaper articles here, here, here, here and here). He got into the best university in his state on a scholarship, he lives independently despite his disabilities (he can even drive and has his own car) and he regularly travels interstate, again independently. He's the most mature and wordly teenager I have ever met, and I'm very, very, very proud to be able to call him my best friend. I think he's undervalued by a lot of you guys simply because he puts on the tough guy act, which is a shame.

But I'm not here to preach. I'm not here to verbally blow the guy. I'm here because tomorrow, he is going into surgery for what could end up being the largest operation of his life. Cade's hips are collapsing, and doctors have been telling him for the last year that without hip replacements, he will be in a wheelchair for life by the end of 2005. And even with the operation, he still might not end up walking. But he's going for the plunge anyway, and having full hip replacements - this means sawing the heads off both femurs, removing all of the bone in his hips, and replacing it all with titanium. That means slicing the fuck out of him. There's a possibility that bone grafts will be necessary in the hips - this will quite possibly be done using part of his ribs. So for intents and purposes he's getting cut up every which way.

Throughout this he will be on morphine, and he won't be conscious for two days. Following this, he will be in hospital for 11 days, after which will be staying at his parents' house for at least two months. There's a 95% chance of success for this operation, and it will improve his height a fair bit, so all is looking well, but at the same time it is dangerous - not least because Cade has SED, which will make the operation last almost four times as long as normal hip replacement operations. Now I'm saying all this because I feel people should know where he is and what he's going through - this is some pretty major stuff. I know most of you won't care, and so be it. But the guy has a lot of people here who he counts as friends, really good friends, and I know he'd appreciate us at least being here for him during all this. So yeah, guys, be pals - leave some comments for Cade to come back to later on. I think he deserves it.

As one of those who had misinterpreted this grumpy tough-guy image as being real arrogance, I wish nothing but the best for him and hope everything goes well.

Trust me, he's very modest. Remember that topic that was called something like "Talk about yourself" or whatever? He wrote this whole thing about how he feels bad when people think he is arrogant, because it's all just part of the way he acts, and he doesn't really mean it.

I'm his best friend, and even I cop the whole "Cade looking down on me for [insert trivial inadequacy here]" treatment sometimes. Heh. You get used to it when you know he's a blowhard. It's exactly the same with Rudi - they're Internet Tough Guys. I guess all shy, quiet guys who hate confrontation suddenly become the Gestapo when they get online.

Cade seems pretty cool to me. I don't really see him as grumpy or mean, cause well if you've been almost everyone who's been on this board for at least 2 years gets pissed off and angry at some of the jerkholes around here.

Anyways, I don't know if Cade hates this place or not, he seems to not like most people here, but he did get like 3rd or something in the last popularity contest, so I guess he is liked and/or respected.

Haha. Nah, he likes most people here, I just think he has a short temper. He's like me - he gets frustrated over the slightest annoying comments sometimes. But I don't think he holds grudges... except against my ex. Yeah, he really hates Danielle. He once suggested beating her to death with a sack full of rocks.

...THAT'S OUR CADE!

I knew Chris had problems, but I had no idea how full-on it was until I read this thread. Considering how incredibly lucky I have been in basically every area of my life, I find it hard to imagine what he's gone through. It's really amazing how he copes with it though, and never seems to play the victim, in fact the exact opposite.

So good luck and walking or not we'll see you back here in a few weeks.

I do most of my "GOD, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU" stuff on livejournal, so yeah, I know what you mean. I reacted to Cade the same way I reacted to several other people I generally admired here -- I had a huge amount of respect for their talent and intelligence, and didn't want them to snap at me because I was on this particular board and I made a bad first impression or something.

Hope everything goes well for him!

Whenever I listen to Cades music, knowing the difficuiltys of trying to get it at a proffesional level I get really jealous. Not only is he good at mixing and arrangment but he puts alot of effort into the feel of it.
However everytime I remember the physical problems he has to face I put that jealousy aside, Im sure Cade would trade it all in to be able to feel normal.

Cade has been listening to my technical bitching on music for about 3 years on msn, and was the only guy who made an effort to guide me in the right direction with a little advice.

I might be alot taller than him but Im half the man he is.

Gud luck Cade

Cade's achievements are impossible to ignore. He is meant for great things. The odds of successful through the operation is pretty high, so I don't think a "Good Luck" is even needed.

Good Luck anyways.

I too would like to wish Cade good luck. He's been a great guy when we've spoken, and he's passionate about so many things. His songs are incredible and I really hope this goes well.

Good luck Cade, I'll be thinking of you. (Well, anything to keep me from doing schoolwork. )
