THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS
Despite the massive criticism of the works of Samurai Clinton on the 3DMM.com community, Grand Theft Auto: Nick Rebellion is an entertaining tribute to the classic 1990s' Nickelodeon and the Grand Theft Auto video game series. It's gags and references to old-school Nickelodeon and GTA, including the sheer cheesiness, makes the film watchable for some laughs. STORY: The film takes place 3 months after the events of Grand Theft Auto: Weinerville. Rocko and Heffer escape from jail with the help of Doug Funnie and recruits Kenan and Kel to join their gang. Soon then, Doug realizes that Spongebob and Patrick have trapped Ren and Stimpy in Weinerville, now titled Bikini Bottom. In a hectic rescue, the gang are ambushed by attacking Imps'. After a somewhat successful rescue, the gang escape from Spongebob with Kenan and Kel's modified truck, later then tipped over by Spongebob and Patrick's car. Doug transforms into Quailman and fights with the two sea creatures, resulting his sacrifice. Pete and Pete then takes the gang home and visits Doug's grave. Animation: The animation is noting spectacular and basically is just heavy use of default scenery from the game and the expansions. Custom scenery is used as well, mostly during the interior car sequences, when Rocko, Heffer and Doug escape jail. All of these sequences are animated over the default day sky background from the game, and made of 3D words and squashed/re-textured default cubes. Custom scenery in the film really shines in the 2nd half of the film, where it was heavily used mostly over backgrounds from Frankie Wendell's expansion pack. The use of the expansions and v3dmm were fair and not something that spectacular. (e.g. Kenan and Kel lived in Nobita's house). Sound and Music: The voice acting was very poor, and there was not much of a distinct accent for any character, besides Heffer. All of the characters were voiced by Clinton himself, except for 2 characters that are voiced by Carl Daisy, who putted a very distinct accent to Spongebob. The voices would have been better if Carl Daisy did most of them. The film also has an interesting soundtrack, from Edwin Starr's War to the Beastie Boys' Intergalactic. Sadly, the only Nickelodeon-related musical piece in the film is the Kenan and Kel theme song. (Aww, Here it Goes by Collio) It's mostly 90s' soundtrack perfectly matches 1998, the setting of the film. Overall: This film remains as the "ugly duckling" of 3DMM movies. It's hated in the community, and somewhat loved outside the community. (e.g. YouTube, MySpace Video) It has a very small cult following, mostly on YouTube/MySpace. The fair animation and the poor voice acting are enjoyable because of it's cheesiness. Space Goat even thought it was interesting. So if you're not into that fancy-pants 3DMM whamo-blamo stuff like REDUX (by Gorosaurous and Aaron Haynes) and Micheal Sandford's work, or if you were interested, like me, then watch it. You won't regret it. 52/100 |
